Tower Bridge combines a working Thames crossing with a visitor attraction inside its towers and former engine rooms. Crossing on the public pavement does not require an attraction ticket; going upstairs to the Walkways does. Choose the outdoor crossing for the bridge itself, or the paid visit if you want the elevated views and an explanation of its machinery.

The opening roadway is the engineering feature to understand. Its two leaves, called bascules, pivot like balanced seesaws so that tall vessels can pass. The historic steam system supplied hydraulic power; an electrically powered hydraulic system replaced it in 1976. The engines on the visitor route explain how the bridge used to work, rather than powering today's lifts. That makes the Engine Rooms worth including if you want more than a skyline photograph.

The visit starts in the North Tower, continues through both elevated Walkways and the South Tower, then finishes in the Engine Rooms. Displays introduce the people who built the bridge, including divers and riveters; the South Tower adds tools, uniforms and stories from its working life.

Visit both Walkways for different views: the Tower of London and The Shard lie to the west, while Canary Wharf is to the east. The Glass Floors look down to the roadway 33.5 metres below. After descending, follow the Blue Line outside to the Engine Rooms. Its bronze plaques commemorate bridge workers, so this connecting walk is also part of the interpretation. Keep your ticket handy for the second building instead of treating the tower exit as the end of the visit.

Use 75 minutes as a planning allowance for a focused self-guided visit, with extra time for admission and any longer stops. This is an editorial allowance, not a timed route guaranteed by Tower Bridge. The operator's audio tours alone run for about 45 minutes, so listening time should not be mistaken for the duration of the whole visit.

Choose how much interpretation you want before starting: the audio options include a highlights tour, a sensory tour and a British Sign Language tour. Bring a charged phone and your own headphones; the operator does not supply headphones. If you want to read displays closely or pause repeatedly for photographs, leave more space before your next booking rather than trying to finish every activity within the planning allowance.

The visitor attraction normally opens daily from 09:30 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00. It closes on 24, 25 and 26 December and opens at 10:00 on 1 January. Choose a slot that leaves enough time for both the towers and the Engine Rooms; last admission is not a suggested arrival time for an unhurried visit.

The second Saturday morning of each month has a designated Relaxed Opening for neurodivergent visitors and their companions, from 09:30 to 11:30. General visitor admission begins at 11:30 on that second Saturday, after the special session ends. Book the dedicated session only if it suits your party; otherwise choose a general-entry slot from 11:30. If watching the roadway rise matters to you, consult the separate Bridge Lift timetable. River-vessel movements determine those times; the attraction's opening hours do not describe a regular lifting schedule.

The standard adult entry ticket currently costs GBP 18 and covers both towers, the elevated Walkways with their Glass Floors, and the Engine Rooms. Children aged 5-15 pay GBP 9; under-fives enter free. Check the operator's concession categories before booking rather than applying the adult rate to everyone in your party.

Book ahead for your preferred entry time, but allow for the arrival queue and security checks: an advance ticket does not provide fast-track entry. The standard ticket also includes the audio tours and the Tower Bridge Cat Trail. Some family activities run on particular dates, so an included activity is not necessarily available during every visit. Select a separate guided-tour product if that is the experience you want.

Aim for the west side of the North Tower: that is where the Ticket Office and main visitor entrance are located. Tower Hill, on the District and Circle lines, is about 500 metres from the Ticket Office. London Bridge station, served by the Northern and Jubilee lines, is another approach from the south side of the river.

Check which bank you are approaching from before following a map pin. The Engine Rooms are a separate part of the route, and their entrance is not the starting point for the normal tower visit. A river arrival is also possible via Tower Pier to the north or London Bridge City Pier to the south. Check your boat operator's current timetable and allow for the walk to the entrance.

Lift access serves the Walkways and the Engine Rooms, but it does not make every display or facility step-free. The operator's visual guide identifies the halfway-up North Tower display as inaccessible by lift. The South Tower's quiet spaces also lack step-free access, and there is no Changing Places toilet on site. Check these details against your requirements before deciding that the complete visit is suitable.

Lifts can fail at short notice. If stairs are not an option, confirm availability with the operator. Visitors whose disability prevents queuing can ask staff at the Ticket Office for assistance. Ordinary entry allows shoulder bags or backpacks up to 45 by 35 by 20 centimetres; suitcases and wheeled bags are refused. Arrange luggage storage before arriving, and keep glass bottles away from the Glass Floors.

Personal hand-held photography is permitted inside Tower Bridge, including flash. Tripods are prohibited, and commercial or promotional photography needs prior permission. The operator also asks visitors to avoid recording other people without consent; keep your framing focused on the bridge, views and your own party.

The Walkways have small camera windows for photographing the skyline. Try those before photographing through a broad glazed panel, and use the mirrored ceiling above the Glass Floor if you want a picture that includes the view below. Standing on the glass is optional: the visual guide identifies a narrow path alongside it. You can enjoy the elevated crossing without making a glass-floor photograph the purpose of the visit.
