国恥の柱について

Pillar of Shame was an eight-metre memorial sculpture by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, created as part of a series confronting major abuses of humanity. The Hong Kong work showed more than fifty distorted human figures compressed into a vertical column. It was unveiled during the 4 June 1997 candlelight commemoration in Victoria Park and subsequently became closely associated with public remembrance of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown in Hong Kong. The sculpture carried bilingual inscriptions referring directly to the massacre and the date 4 June 1989. This page represents the historical Hong Kong monument, not a sculpture that can currently be visited at its mapped University of Hong Kong location.

中には何が入っているのか

The work was designed to be read from close range as well as from a distance. Its stacked bodies, faces and limbs formed a single compressed mass rather than a conventional heroic figure, while the base carried text and imagery connected with the 1989 killings. The surface was later painted orange during the artist's Color Orange human-rights campaign, changing the appearance familiar from photographs of its final campus years. There is no surviving public installation to walk around at the former site today. The meaningful details now have to be understood through archival photographs, descriptions and the recorded inscriptions rather than through an on-site object.

見学時間の目安

Do not allocate a conventional sightseeing visit to Pillar of Shame. The sculpture is no longer standing at the mapped point, so there is no gallery route, viewing platform or monument circuit to complete. A traveller researching Hong Kong's memorial culture may spend time reading the history before visiting the wider University of Hong Kong area, but the former position itself offers no assured encounter with the artwork. No official visitor duration is recorded, and any itinerary should treat this as a historical location rather than an accessible attraction.

季節と混雑状況

There is no recommended visiting hour or season for seeing Pillar of Shame because the original sculpture is not on public display at the mapped campus location. Daylight may make the surrounding campus easier to understand, but it does not restore the monument or guarantee access to its former position. Travellers should check current University of Hong Kong access information separately before entering university grounds. Commemorative activity around 4 June is politically and legally sensitive in Hong Kong; this guide does not infer that an event will occur or that any gathering is permitted.

チケット

There is no admission ticket for Pillar of Shame because there is no current public exhibition of the original at this location. The sculpture was removed from the University of Hong Kong campus and placed in storage, so ticket desks, scheduled tours and a viewing entrance do not exist for it. Public access to the stored work is not recorded. Do not buy a tour or travel to the campus on the assumption that a paid ticket will reveal the monument; any commercial listing should be checked against the sculpture's documented removal.

行き方

The mapped point identifies the former University of Hong Kong campus setting, not the present location of a viewable sculpture. Use the coordinates only to understand where the memorial stood during its campus years. The university is an active educational institution rather than an open-air monument park, and current visitor access conditions should be checked with the university before travelling. The original work's storage location is not presented as a public attraction. A visit focused solely on seeing Pillar of Shame will therefore end without access to the artwork.

気をつけるべきこと

The central practical trap is simple: photographs and older maps can make Pillar of Shame appear to remain on the campus, but the monument was removed in December 2021. Do not attempt to enter restricted university areas or search service spaces for the stored sculpture. The subject concerns the Tiananmen crackdown and Hong Kong's changing public memorial landscape, so describe and photograph the former site with care toward students, staff and bystanders. Current campus rules, gathering restrictions and any special security measures are not recorded here and must not be guessed.

写真

There is no current sculpture at the mapped point to photograph. Historical images show the orange monument, its crowded column of bodies and its bilingual base inscriptions, but recreating those views on campus is impossible after removal. Photography of the surrounding university should follow whatever campus rules apply on the day, and people should not be photographed closely without consent. The location of the stored original is not a visitor photo opportunity. For visual study of the work itself, use credited archival images and the artist's documentation rather than assuming a modern campus photograph shows the monument.
