British Museum

The British Museum brings together objects from human history, art and culture across more than fifty galleries. It is a collection visit: choose the cultures or objects that interest you before deciding how much of the building to cover. The permanent collection is free to enter, so a focused visit is a reasonable choice without trying to justify an expensive all-day ticket.

For a first visit, decide between a highlights route and spending longer with one subject. The museum points visitors towards Egyptian mummies, the Sutton Hoo burial and the Islamic world, among many other collections. Those are different starting points for a route, rather than a promise that every gallery will be available on your date. Check the museum's gallery notices before building your day around one display.

The museum's three-hour trail provides a practical selection across several floors. On the ground floor it includes the Sloane Astrolabe in Room 1, Assyrian lion-hunt reliefs in Room 10 and the Parthenon sculptures in Room 18. Upstairs, the Sutton Hoo burial in Room 41 and Lewis Chessmen in Room 40 offer a different focus from the monumental sculpture below.

Use these room numbers to choose a manageable group of displays, then consult the current map for the route between them. The trail is a selection, not a requirement to complete every stop. Objects can be lent to other museums and galleries can close, so the published list does not guarantee that a particular object is on view. If that object is the reason for your visit, check its current display information before travelling.

Allow about three hours for a broad highlights visit, using the museum's own three-hour object trail as a starting point. The museum also publishes a one-hour trail for visitors with less time, plus a twelve-object selection for families. A three-hour planning allowance is therefore useful for choosing among routes, rather than a claim that the entire museum can be completed in that time.

Choose the shorter route if the museum is one stop in a busy London day. Choose a smaller set of rooms and allow longer if you want to read closely, sketch or use the audio guide. Keep entry queues and any meal or exhibition outside the time you intend to spend following an object trail.

Regular gallery hours are 10:00-17:00, with Friday opening until 20:30. Normal last entry is 16:45, or 20:15 on Fridays, and staff begin clearing galleries ten minutes before closing. A late entry slot gives little viewing time; choose your arrival around the route you want to complete. The Great Court normally remains open until 17:30 on other days, which does not extend access to the galleries.

The museum is closed on 24-26 December. Its current notices also announce early closing at 16:00 on 28 September 2026 and 15:30 on 30 September 2026. There is no late opening on Good Friday, 26 March 2027. These dated exceptions take priority over the regular week. Individual gallery closures are separate from whole-museum hours: check the live notices again when one room is central to your plan.

Permanent-collection entry is free, and the museum recommends booking a free timed ticket in advance. A booking provides priority entry at busy times. Walk-up visits are possible, but admission without a booking depends on capacity and may involve a longer queue. An unavailable online slot is therefore not the same as a guarantee that nobody can enter that day.

Arrive at your booked time rather than early. If you arrive late, the museum says it will try to accommodate you, but entry may be delayed. Special exhibitions have their own ticket arrangements; an exhibition ticket also provides access to the permanent collection. Check the exhibition's own page for its price and conditions instead of treating general free admission as an exhibition pass.

Use Great Russell Street for the main entrance, or Montague Place for the second entrance. Check which entrance your booking instructions name before setting off. The museum lists Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, Russell Square and Goodge Street as nearby Tube stations; use Transport for London's journey planner to choose the route from your actual starting point.

Leave time for the walk from the station and the museum's security check. All visitors pass through screening and a bag search. Travellers arriving between a hotel checkout and a train should arrange luggage storage first: wheeled suitcases and large luggage are not allowed onto museum premises, so reaching the entrance with a suitcase can prevent the visit altogether.

Step-free entry does not mean every gallery is accessible by lift. At the Great Russell Street entrance, lifts on either side of the entrance steps provide step-free access. Ask the welcome staff for assistance if the entrance or queue creates an accessibility barrier.

The museum currently lists Rooms 16, 67, 69 and 95 among spaces without lift or level access. It also warns of a temporary loss of lift or level access to Africa in Room 25 and the Pizzeria until late September; the notice does not give a precise reopening day. Confirm the route with the museum rather than assuming that work has finished. Accessible toilets are available, but there is no Changing Places toilet on site. Hand-held photography and video for private use are allowed in most galleries, and the museum's general policy explicitly permits hand-held flash photography. Signs identify the displays where photography is restricted, so check the local instruction before taking a picture. A general permission is not permission to photograph every object or exhibition.

Tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the building without a special permit. Commercial photography and filming have separate arrangements. For an ordinary visit, plan around a hand-held camera or phone and leave support equipment behind; do not assume that a photography accessory will be accepted simply because your camera is allowed.
