The Natural History Museum in South Kensington is both a collection of natural history and a building designed to tell that story. It opened on 18 April 1881. Alfred Waterhouse covered its Romanesque-style exterior and interior with terracotta ornament depicting plants and animals; looking at the carved creatures is part of the visit, not merely a way to pass time before the galleries.

For a first visit, start in Hintze Hall. Hope, the blue whale skeleton suspended above it, gives the central space its scale. The museum then branches into galleries on fossils, animals, the Earth and the relationship between people and nature. The choice is broad enough that a short visit works best with a few named priorities, while a return visit can follow a different subject entirely.

Hintze Hall is the clearest starting point: see Hope from the floor, then use the balconies for a different view of the skeleton and Waterhouse's decorated ceiling. The permanent Dinosaurs Gallery has an animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex, a Triceratops skull and fossil displays. In the East Wing, Earth Hall has a Stegosaurus, and the upper floors hold the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Gallery with its earthquake simulator.

Families can follow the museum's published family route, which begins in the gardens and takes in several major exhibits. Visitors more interested in specimens than spectacle can use the map to choose galleries such as Treasures, Fossil Marine Reptiles or the Images of Nature. The map distinguishes free permanent galleries from temporary exhibitions, so check it before assuming every display is included in general entry.

Allow about two and a half hours for a first visit focused on Hintze Hall, the Dinosaurs Gallery, Earth Hall and one further gallery. This is a selective route, not a time the museum guarantees. The museum's own family self-guided route is estimated at about two hours, which gives a useful comparison for a selective visit.

A visitor who only wants to see Hope and the architecture can spend less time; someone reading detailed specimen labels or adding a paid exhibition can easily need longer. Keep queueing, security screening, cloakroom use and a meal outside that gallery time. See the museum map to choose a compact route. If you have a fixed later booking, select the galleries before arrival and use the museum map to avoid crossing the large building repeatedly.

The South Kensington museum lists daily opening from 10:00 to 17:50, with last entry at 17:30. Those are different times: the last-entry cutoff does not extend the visit beyond closing. The operator lists closures on 9 October 2026 for a charity gala and on 24–26 December. Check its visit page again for the day you intend to go, particularly around events and holidays.

The museum warns that queues can form during weekends and school holidays. A free advance ticket helps guarantee entry and can reduce the queue in busy periods. A late arrival may be enough for one chosen gallery but is a poor fit for the full 150-minute plan. If the gardens are part of your visit, check their separate hours: the Nature Discovery Garden closes at daylight-dependent times.

General entry and the permanent galleries are free. Book a free entry ticket on the museum website if you want guaranteed entry; arriving without one can mean waiting, especially on weekends and during school holidays. A ticket for a paid exhibition or event is a separate product, and its own booking page determines its price and terms. Do not treat the price of one temporary exhibition as the price of admission to the museum.

The museum's visitor admissions policy says entry may be close to the ticket time rather than instantaneous. Compare the particular exhibition you want with the free galleries before paying: a selective first visit can be complete without an upgrade. General admission itself remains free.

The museum is at Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London SW7 5BD. South Kensington Underground station is about a five-minute walk from the Central and East entrances, but the station itself is not step free. The museum describes access from the station subway to the Central Entrance via the Subway Gate, but visitors who need a particular step-free route should confirm it with the museum before travelling.

The Central Entrance is reached from the East Gate at Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road. Its ramp is steep, as the visual guide warns. The museum's getting-here and access pages give differing descriptions of the West Entrance's step-free access; neither provides a safe basis to recommend an East or West route for every visitor. Contact the museum about route-specific needs and current lift status. The West Entrance closes at 17:00. There is no general on-site visitor parking; limited Blue Badge spaces require advance arrangement.

Expect a possible bag search on arrival under the museum's security guidance. Large or wheeled suitcases cannot be taken through the galleries. The Central Entrance cloakroom accepts large bags and suitcases if space is available and charges by weight, so travelling without bulky luggage is easier. A free ticket is useful for busy entry periods but does not remove security screening or guarantee that every gallery is open.

Most public areas have step-free access by lift, but the museum advises checking current lift status before visiting. The Central Entrance ramp is steep; ask the museum which entrance and lift route meets your needs before relying on a step-free journey. Accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility are listed on the facilities page. Loan wheelchairs are limited, free and first come, first served. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult under the visitor admissions policy. The visual guide and map provide orientation, and staff can help if waiting in a queue is difficult.

Personal, non-commercial photography is allowed in the Natural History Museum, subject to restrictions shown beside particular objects or exhibitions. Check the sign at a temporary exhibition rather than assuming the general permission applies inside it. Do not deliberately photograph identifiable children or vulnerable people without the accompanying adult's consent, and respect other visitors' wishes not to appear in a picture.

Flashes, extra lighting, tripods, monopods, gimbals and selfie sticks require permission. Photography, filming or streaming of tours is prohibited. Commercial photography also requires prior permission. For a useful personal image of Hope, the Hintze Hall balconies offer a view down onto the suspended skeleton; the floor gives a different sense of scale. Keep access routes clear while taking either shot.
