Athens Airport: Metro, Bus, Rail or Taxi

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) is the scheduled passenger airport for Athens arrivals. It stands in the Mesogeia area, 33 km northeast of central Athens. The metro and suburban-rail station is opposite the main terminal, while public buses leave from outside Arrivals Exit 5. Metro Line 3, the Blue Line, connects the airport with Syntagma, Monastiraki, central Athens and Dimotiko Theatro in Piraeus. Use it when your accommodation is near the Line 3 corridor or when you want a predictable rail journey. OASA’s four Airport Express routes are direct: X95 serves Syntagma, X96 serves Piraeus, X93 serves the Kifissos and Liossion intercity bus stations, and X97 serves Elliniko. Athens Airport publishes approximately 60 minutes to Piraeus by Metro Line 3, 65 minutes by suburban railway and 90 minutes by X96. These are transport-leg estimates, not hotel-to-ferry-terminal times. Add luggage collection, the walk to the station or bus stop, waiting time and the final connection at Piraeus. STASY’s rounded Line 3 table gives the airport as 63 minutes from Dimotiko Theatro and Syntagma as 24 minutes from the same reference point, placing the rail leg between ATH and Syntagma at roughly 39 minutes. Hellenic Train publishes the airport–Athens–Piraeus route but does not give one universal airport-to-hotel duration on its general route page. Its timetable and fare search displays the available service after you enter the stations, date and preferred travel time. OASA lists the full-fare Airport Express ticket at €5.50 for one journey to or from ATH. You can buy it from ticket vendors, or use a supported physical or virtual Visa or Mastercard on the vehicle’s blue validation machine. The full-fare airport metro ticket is €9.00, and the two-way airport metro ticket is €16.00 when used within 30 days. The airport metro product is valid for 90 minutes after validation and also covers the relevant suburban-rail section, but it does not cover Airport Express buses or the seasonal X80 service. Athens Airport publishes a flat taxi fare of €50 between ATH and the Athens city-centre inner ring from 05:00 to 24:00, Monday to Sunday. From 00:00 to 05:00, the published flat fare is €65. The fare applies to the defined inner-ring area, not every Athens address or Piraeus; the charge is determined by arrival time at the destination and includes applicable extras. Airport Metro Line 3 runs every 36 minutes throughout the week. STASY’s current table lists airport departures from 06:10 to 23:34. The detailed table gives the first airport train from Syntagma at 06:49 and the last at 00:13 on the Monday-to-Thursday and Sunday pattern; Friday has a later central-city last departure, but the airport route itself remains listed only to 23:34. Current night engineering arrangements close Eleonas, Kerameikos and Monastiraki at 21:40 from Sunday to Thursday. Line 3 continues between Syntagma, Doukissis Plakentias and the airport, while the western central section operates separately. For an arrival after the metro window, start with the Airport Express buses. OASA publishes X93, X95, X96 and X97 as 24-hour services: choose X93 for the intercity bus stations, X95 for Syntagma, X96 for Piraeus or X97 for Elliniko and its published night connection from Dafni. Metro Line 3 is not an all-night airport service. STASY lists airport departures until 23:34 and expressly excludes airport trains from Saturday’s 24-hour metro extension. Sunday follows the regular airport pattern, with trains every 36 minutes, but the Sunday-to-Thursday engineering arrangement still closes parts of the central section at 21:40. Taxis operate 24 hours a day, every day, at the designated rank beside Arrivals Exit 3. The airport’s inner-ring flat fare is €50 from 05:00 to 24:00 and €65 from 00:00 to 05:00, including Sundays. Sunday suburban-rail travel needs a date-specific search. Hellenic Train’s planner asks for the departure station, arrival station, travel date and preferred time, then displays the available trains and full fare. The airport operator confirms the route to Athens and Piraeus but does not publish a universal Sunday interval. For a Piraeus ferry, compare the airport leg with the ferry operator’s check-in rule, terminal walk and luggage time. Athens Airport estimates about 60 minutes by metro, 65 minutes by suburban railway and 90 minutes by X96, excluding waiting and boarding. For Rafina or Lavrio, the airport lists regional buses but publishes no universal interval on its transport page, so confirm the departure before selecting that port.
