Johannesburg Airport Transfers: Gautrain and Taxis

Johannesburg has two passenger airports used by visitors. O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is the principal gateway and is 15 km from Johannesburg’s CBD, according to the city tourism authority. Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is north-west of Johannesburg; its operator gives a distance of 30.9 km and about 45 minutes from Sandton. The airport you book determines the transfer you can use: only O.R. Tambo has a direct Gautrain station. At O.R. Tambo, the main choices are the Gautrain Airport Service, an ACSA-accredited metered taxi, a hotel shuttle or a pre-arranged road transfer. The Gautrain station is integrated with the Central Terminal Building, with its concourse directly linked to the departures level. Lanseria lists taxis and transfers, car hire and a bus terminal. Its named taxi provider is Liata, the Lanseria International Airport Taxi Association, which offers standard taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles. The airport describes its bus terminal as a low-cost option mainly suited to residents or people familiar with the city. The Gautrain Airport Service links O.R. Tambo with Sandton and Marlboro. The wider commuter network continues to Rosebank, Park Station, Midrand, Pretoria and Hatfield, but the airport train is not a direct service to every Johannesburg neighbourhood. Lanseria publishes about 40 minutes and 30.3 km from Randburg, about 41 minutes and 59.8 km from Pretoria, and about 45 minutes and 30.9 km from Sandton. Gautrain does not publish one universal airport fare because the amount depends on the station pair, travel period and fare product. Peak pricing applies when entering the Gautrain system from 06:00 to 08:30 or from 15:00 to 18:30 on weekdays, and throughout weekends and public holidays. ACSA does not publish a fixed fare for its accredited O.R. Tambo metered taxis; it directs passengers to the airport information desk. Lanseria does not publish a fixed Liata fare on its airport page either. Gautrain buses connect stations to surrounding areas, but the operator says the bus service does not serve O.R. Tambo Airport directly. Bus route information is available at stations and in the app. The fare calculator warns that bus services are limited over weekends and tells passengers to use the trip planner for the intended journey. Lanseria confirms that shuttle buses currently operate from its bus terminal, east of the terminal building through the doors leading to the old car-rental offices. The airport publishes no fixed route, frequency or departure timetable there. Contact the service for the travel-date departure rather than arriving with an assumed interval. For O.R. Tambo, check the Gautrain station planner against your arrival date and allow time for baggage and onward travel. ACSA specifically promotes accredited metered taxis and directs passengers to the terminal information desk, which helps you avoid accepting an unsolicited ride inside the terminal. A taxi or pre-arranged transfer is the practical choice when the accommodation is far from a Gautrain station, when several travellers share luggage or when you arrive outside the rail window.
