Rio Airport Transfers: BRT, Metro and VLT

Rio de Janeiro has two airports used by travellers. RIOgaleão–Tom Jobim (GIG) is on Ilha do Governador, about 20 km from central Rio. Santos Dumont (SDU) is in the city centre, about 2 km from central Rio. The airport you use changes the best transfer: GIG needs a road connection into the city, while SDU is beside the Centro, port and VLT network. From GIG, the main public-transport options are the Transcarioca Parador BRT, regular buses, the GIG–Terminal Gentileza executive BRT and a BRT-to-metro connection at Vicente de Carvalho. The BRT also connects with SuperVia trains at Madureira. (RIOgaleão BRT, checked 2026-09-28)

From SDU, VLT Carioca Line 1 runs towards Terminal Gentileza and Line 3 towards Central. Stops include Cinelândia, Carioca and Candelária, with connections to metro, trains, buses and ferries. The airport and operators do not publish one fixed GIG-to-hotel journey time for every neighbourhood. GIG is about 20 km from central Rio, but the practical trip includes the terminal walk, waiting, traffic, any interchange and the final route from Vicente de Carvalho, Madureira or Terminal Gentileza. The Transcarioca Parador connects GIG with Terminal Alvorada and Madureira, passing Vicente de Carvalho for MetrôRio Line 2. RIOgaleão publishes the route and interchange but no fixed airport-to-city duration. Allow for boarding, road conditions, the BRT-to-metro transfer and the onward journey. The GIG–Terminal Gentileza service is a direct connection to an interchange, not a door-to-door hotel transfer. Terminal Gentileza links with VLT, municipal buses and Transbrasil BRT; it is also 500 m from Rio’s intercity bus station. SDU is close to Centro. VLT Carioca publishes its lines and stops but no universal airport-to-hotel duration. Line 1 serves Terminal Gentileza; Line 3 serves Central, passing Carioca and Cinelândia. RIOgaleão’s current pages give inconsistent fare information for the Transcarioca Parador, so this guide does not quote a fare for that route. Check the current Line 42 fare with Mobi-Rio before boarding. RIOgaleão’s route table lists R$4.30 for regular routes 915, 922, 328, 925 and 760D, R$15.00 for GIG–Terminal Gentileza and R$18.00 for the 1760D GIG–Charitas service. The airport lists R$7.90 for metro and R$9.70 for metro plus BRT with Jaé. The airport directs passengers to the Galeão Tom Jobim 2 station at Terminal 2 arrivals, Door D. MetrôRio states that BRT integrations work only with Jaé, so use the accepted card rather than assuming separate payments produce the integrated fare. VLT Carioca charges R$5.00 per journey. Buy or reload a Jaé card at station machines, or generate a Jaé QR code in the app. The card is not sold inside the train. Transfers between VLT lines in the same direction cost one fare when made within one hour, with another validation required. RIOgaleão does not publish one universal taxi fare to every hotel. Regular and executive taxi prices use a taximeter or a table regulated by Rio City Hall. The Transcarioca Parador is published every day from 04:00 to 00:00. RIOgaleão identifies Galeão Tom Jobim Stations 1 and 2 but does not print a fixed departure interval on its page. For the GIG metro connection, RIOgaleão publishes MetrôRio service from 05:00 to midnight Monday to Saturday, and from 07:00 to 23:00 on Sundays and holidays. These are metro operating windows, not a guarantee that a passenger reaching Vicente de Carvalho after baggage collection will catch the last train. Check both legs in a date-specific planner. VLT Carioca operates every day from 05:00 to 23:00. The operator publishes average intervals of up to eight minutes on Lines 1, 3 and 4, depending on day and time, with vehicles every 3.5 minutes on shared sections. The airport bus table links timetables for Mobi-Rio Line 42, Ideal Line 925 and Auto Viação 1001’s 760D. It gives no timetable for Paranapuan’s 915, 922 and 328, or for the GIG–Búzios and GIG–Macaé services. GIG’s Transcarioca Parador is published until midnight every day, but RIOgaleão does not publish an overnight BRT service after 00:00. The metro connection has a separate closing window and requires the BRT interchange. For a late international arrival, check immigration and baggage time, the next BRT and the last metro before relying on public transport. If public transport no longer fits, RIOgaleão lists regular and executive taxis at Terminal 2 arrivals. Aerocoop, Coopertramo and Coopatur are listed with 24-hour service. Sunday service is explicitly included for the Transcarioca BRT. MetrôRio starts later and closes earlier on Sundays and holidays, while VLT keeps its published 05:00–23:00 daily window. At GIG, international arrivals use the Uber pick-up point on the departures floor at Door D. Domestic arrivals exit the domestic arrivals area, turn left and follow the orange, green or purple Uber Zone signs. Keep the booking open until the vehicle, driver and zone match, and use the airport’s official taxi ranks rather than accepting an unsolicited ride inside the terminal. The airport lists regular taxis at Terminal 2, Floor 0, arrivals. For departures, regular taxis leave from Door A and executive taxis from Door B. The published fare rule is a taximeter or Rio City Hall table, not a universal hotel price. Confirm the official rank and the app or meter price before setting off. For SDU, VLT is the direct rail connection for Centro and the port during its operating window. A licensed taxi or app transfer is simpler for a late flight, heavy luggage or accommodation outside the rail network. The Santos Dumont VLT stop provides level boarding, tactile paving, Braille signage, ramps, wheelchair spaces, priority seating, audio announcements and electronic information panels.
