Sydney Airport Transfers: Train, Bus and Taxi

Sydney’s main passenger airport is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), about 8 km from Sydney CBD. International flights use Terminal 1, while domestic flights use Terminals 2 and 3. (Sydney Airport transport options, checked 2026-09-28)

The fastest public-transport choice for the city centre is the Airport Link train. T8 Airport & South Line trains leave from stations underneath both airport precincts and continue through Central, Town Hall, Wynyard and Circular Quay. Use the station at your own terminal; the airport-to-city journey is direct, but your final hotel walk or connecting service is separate. Public buses are useful when your destination is east or south of the centre. Route 350 connects the Domestic Terminal with Bondi Junction through Mascot, Maroubra and Coogee. Route 420 serves both terminals on the Burwood–Mascot Station route through Rockdale and Campsie. DART Express offers a bookable shuttle from Terminal 1 to listed CBD-area stops such as Central, Hyde Park, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour and The Rocks. Sydney Airport publishes approximately 13 minutes by train to the city. This is the airport-to-city rail leg, not a guaranteed door-to-door time. Add the walk from arrivals to the station, waiting time, platform access, luggage handling and the walk or connecting bus from your city station to the accommodation. For a road transfer, Sydney Airport describes the CBD as about a 20-minute taxi or rideshare journey and driving as about 25 minutes in light traffic. Those figures do not cover the time spent collecting luggage, reaching the rank or rideshare pick-up area, or finding the final building entrance. Transport for NSW does not publish one universal journey time for routes 350, 420 or N20 because the duration changes with the stop, direction, traffic and timetable variation. The route pages publish the stops and current timetable tools instead. DART Express likewise presents bookable journeys to named drop-off locations rather than one airport-to-CBD time for every passenger. The airport train is charged as the normal Opal or contactless train fare plus a separate station access fee. For an adult using an Opal card or contactless payment, the current airport station access fee is AU$18.61. An Opal single ticket carries a higher AU$19.00 airport access fee, before the train fare is added. The fee applies when entering or leaving either airport station. Use an Opal card or contactless adult card and tap on and tap off with the same card or device. Transport for NSW says contactless and Opal are cheaper than an Opal single ticket, and the Trip Planner calculates the complete public-transport fare, including the airport access fee where it applies. The airport fee is not included in the normal daily or weekly Opal travel caps; it has a separate weekly cap of AU$37.75 for adults. Bus fares use the Opal network and depend on the journey, passenger type and applicable discounts. Transport for NSW directs passengers to its Trip Planner for the fare rather than publishing one airport-to-CBD bus price. Taxi fares are clearer for a direct CBD trip: the current fixed-fare trial sets AU$60 for a standard taxi and AU$80 for a maxi taxi when the listed conditions apply. The fixed fare includes taxes, fees, levies and road tolls, but a card surcharge or cleaning fee can still apply. T8 Airport & South Line trains run every day between 05:00 and midnight. Sydney Airport describes Airport Link trains as running approximately every 10 minutes. Route 350 runs between the Domestic Terminal and Bondi Junction, with Transport for NSW publishing at least every 10 minutes during the daytime, seven days a week. DART Express publishes a daily shuttle service from Terminal 1 with regular departures and online booking to named city stops. Its booking system is the place to select the available departure and destination; it does not publish one universal interval for every stop on the homepage. Sydney Airport and Transport for NSW both direct travellers to date-specific planning tools because timetables can change for diversions, special events and disruptions. For arrivals after the T8 window, Transport for NSW publishes N20 late-night buses between Riverwood and the City via the International Terminal. The published operating pattern is around midnight to 04:00. Route 420 also serves the International Terminal during the daytime, approximately 04:00 to midnight. Sunday is included in the published daily pattern for T8 trains and routes 350 and 420. Route 350 has its stated daytime frequency seven days a week, while DART Express describes its airport shuttle as operating daily. Sydney Airport’s taxi ranks operate outside each terminal, with supervisors available during peak periods. Rideshare pick-up depends on the terminal and selected service: Uber uses designated locations at T1, T2 and T3, while other rideshare services use the Priority Pick-up Zone. Each terminal has a sheltered taxi rank. Take a taxi from the rank rather than accepting an unsolicited offer inside the terminal. For a direct trip to the designated Sydney CBD area, the fixed-fare trial applies to non-booked rank trips: AU$60 for a standard taxi or AU$80 for a maxi taxi when five or more passengers travel or a maxi taxi is requested. Rideshare fares vary with vehicle type, travel time and distance. At T1, UberX uses Rank C outside Arrivals Hall B with PIN technology, while other Uber products use Rank B. T2 passengers use the Priority Pick-up Zone; T3 Uber pick-ups are kerbside outside arrivals. Other rideshare services also use the Priority Pick-up Zone.
