Xi’an Airport Transfers: Metro, Bus or Taxi

Xi’an’s principal airport is Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), in Xianyang northwest of Xi’an. The airport publishes approximately 37 km to Bell Tower, 27 km to Xi’an North railway station and 39 km to Xi’an railway station. International and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan flights use Terminal 5; domestic flights may use T2, T3 or T5, so check your airline’s terminal before choosing a station or bus stop. Metro Line 14 is the clearest public-transport route. Airport West serves T1, T2 and T3, while Airport (T5) serves the new terminal. Line 14 passes Xi’an North railway station, where travellers can connect with Line 2 towards Bell Tower and the historic centre, or other metro lines for destinations farther south and east. Airport buses are practical when the metro has closed, when a published stop is close to the accommodation, or when luggage makes a rail interchange inconvenient. The airport lists Bell Tower, west-city, high-tech, university-town, air-rail and night routes. A metered taxi is the door-to-door option for families, bulky luggage and arrivals after the useful public-transport window. Official taxi ranks are outside T2, outside the T3 ground-transport hub and outside T5 at basement level. Use the rank, keep the receipt and avoid unsolicited drivers inside the terminal. The airport does not publish one universal door-to-door time from XIY to every Xi’an address. Your total includes terminal walking, immigration and baggage collection, the walk to the station or bus stop, any metro interchange, the final walk and road conditions. The published full running time for Line 14 is approximately 54 minutes 20 seconds between Airport West and Heshao. That is train time, not the time from aircraft door to accommodation. Terminal 5 has its own Airport (T5) station one stop beyond Airport West, so use the station named for your terminal and allow time to reach the platform. Airport buses publish route-specific journey figures. The airport’s bus information gives approximately 70 minutes for the early-morning city-to-airport line and the Chengxi–Bell Tower service, about 80 minutes for the night route serving Xi’an North railway station and the central railway station, and about 90 minutes for Night Bus Line 5. For taxis, the airport publishes reference distances rather than a fixed journey time: approximately 37 km to Bell Tower, 45 km to the north square of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, 27 km to Xi’an North railway station and 35 km to the High-Tech Zone’s Shangri-La Hotel. Xi’an Metro uses distance-based fares. The published bands are ¥2 for up to 6 km, ¥3 for 6–10 km, ¥4 for 10–14 km, ¥5 for 14–20 km, ¥6 for 20–26 km and ¥7 for longer distances up to the next published band. The authority specifically lists ¥7 from Airport West to Xi’an North and ¥9 from Airport West to Heshao. The airport-bus operator publishes route names, departure windows, intervals and journey times, but its English route page does not show one fixed fare beside every city service. Buy from the official airport-bus counter or machine and confirm the displayed price for the route you select. Do not carry a fare from one route to another or to a night service. Taxi charges are metered. For Xi’an-registered cars up to 1.8 litres, the airport publishes a ¥8.5 daytime starting fare, ¥2 per kilometre and a ¥9.5 night starting fare. Xianyang-registered cars below 1.8 litres start at ¥8 by day or ¥9 at night and charge ¥1.8 per kilometre. Larger Xianyang taxis are listed at ¥10 by day or ¥11 at night, with ¥2.4 per kilometre. The meter does not cover every extra. The airport says passengers pay one-way bridge or road tolls; after 12 km for Xi’an taxis or 8 km for Xianyang taxis, the published empty-return allowance applies. Line 14’s published station hours are 06:00–22:20 from Airport West towards Heshao. At Terminal 5, the first train towards Heshao is listed at 06:04 and the last at 22:24. In the return direction, Airport (T5) trains towards Airport West are published from 06:29 to 23:22. Leave time for immigration, baggage and the walk from the arrivals level to the station. The authority publishes Line 14 intervals of 5 minutes 25 seconds during weekday peaks, 7 minutes 27 seconds during Saturday and Sunday peaks, and 8 minutes 31 seconds off-peak. Airport buses publish route-specific patterns. The Chengxi–Bell Tower service runs every 30–50 minutes from the airport; the high-tech route runs every 30–40 minutes; the air-rail route runs every 50 minutes; and the Chang’an University Town route runs every 50–60 minutes. For an international departure, the airport advises reaching Terminal 5 two to three hours before take-off. All international and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan flights use T5. Line 14 is not an overnight airport connection. The published last citybound train leaves Airport West at 22:20 and Airport (T5) at 22:24. The airport publishes late-night buses after the metro. Night Bus Line 2 runs 21:20–22:40, Night Bus Line 3 runs 21:00–00:40, and Night Bus Line 1 runs 22:20–01:00 at 20–30-minute intervals. Sunday is included in the published Line 14 service pattern: the authority gives a separate Sunday peak interval and does not publish a Sunday shutdown. T1, T2 and T3 are connected by the airport’s free terminal shuttle. T2–T3 service is published from 04:30 to 23:30 landside and 07:30 to 23:30 airside; T1–T2 departures are tied to departing and arriving flights. Travellers arriving at T5 should use the T5 metro station, taxi rank or T5 transport hub rather than assuming that the older terminals are walkable.
