Mount Lofty Summit Lookout

Mount Lofty Summit is a public lookout in the Adelaide Hills, about 15 kilometres east of central Adelaide. At more than 710 metres above sea level, it provides a broad view over Adelaide’s metropolitan plain toward Gulf St Vincent. The summit is also a trail destination within the Mount Lofty Ranges rather than only a roadside viewpoint: walkers arrive from Waterfall Gully, Cleland Wildlife Park and adjoining bushland. Vehicle access, an accessible lookout and visitor facilities make the panorama available without completing a long hike. Mount Lofty Summit sits within Cleland National Park, linking the lookout to the park’s walking network. The vehicle gates open daily from 06:00 to 21:00 between April and September and from 06:00 to 23:00 between October and March. Fire-danger and other park closures can override these hours.

The summit precinct combines the main accessible lookout with practical visitor facilities. Accessible parking spaces and accessible toilets sit near the viewpoint, while a visitor-information outlet, gift shop, restaurant and café serve the summit area. Baby-change facilities are also provided. The gift shop operates daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and closes on Christmas Day; these are shop hours, not the vehicle-gate schedule. Signed walking routes extend beyond the compact lookout precinct toward Waterfall Gully, Cleland Wildlife Park and the Heysen Trail, with different distances, gradients and access conditions.

Allow about 30 to 60 minutes for the lookout and summit facilities if arriving by car or bus. Walking to the summit changes the visit substantially. The Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty Summit Hike is 4.5 kilometres one way and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, so a return on foot is a demanding half-day outing. The Steub Trail from Cleland Wildlife Park is a gentler 7-kilometre return route taking about three hours. Add time for the visitor-information outlet, café or restaurant rather than treating those stops as part of the trail estimate.

From April through September, the summit car-park vehicle gates open daily from 06:00 to 21:00. From October through March, they remain open until 23:00. On 31 August 2026, the April–September schedule therefore applies. The gift shop follows its own daily 09:00–17:00 timetable and closes on Christmas Day. Clear mornings give the best chance of long views across Adelaide and toward the gulf. The park closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days and may close when the fire danger rating is Extreme, overriding the ordinary gate schedule.

Entry to Mount Lofty Summit and the lookout is free for adults and other general visitors. No visitor-entry fee or park permit applies. Food, drinks and purchases from the restaurant, café or gift shop are separate from free lookout access. Walkers and passengers using Adelaide Metro route 823 do not need an attraction ticket to enter the summit precinct.

Mount Lofty Summit is 15 kilometres east of Adelaide by road, reached via Mount Lofty Summit Road. Paid parking, including accessible bays, is beside the lookout. Adelaide Metro route 823 links Crafers with Cleland Wildlife Park via Stop 26 Summit Rd – Mt Lofty Summit and runs seven days except Christmas Day. From city services, transfer at Stop 24A Crafers Park ‘n’ Ride for the summit; use Stop 24 Crafers Ramp on the return. Walking alternatives are the 4.5-kilometre one-way Waterfall Gully hike and the 7-kilometre return Steub Trail from Cleland Wildlife Park.

Fire danger and planned control work can override normal access. The park closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days and may close on Extreme Fire Danger days. The next scheduled pest-control closures east of Mount Lofty Summit Road are overnight on 7–11 and 14–18 September 2026, from 21:00 to 05:00. Pets are not permitted; assistance dogs are welcome when restrained on a lead and kept under effective control. The lookout itself is step-free, but the separate Steub Trail has inclines and berms, so wheelchair users require assistance despite its smooth, hard-based surface.

The main lookout is the straightforward photography position, with elevated views across metropolitan Adelaide toward Gulf St Vincent. A clear morning offers the strongest chance of an unobstructed long-distance panorama, while changing cloud and haze can alter how much of the plain and coast is visible. The accessible route, nearby accessible parking and broad lookout make it possible to photograph the view without hiking from Waterfall Gully or Cleland Wildlife Park. Plan around the vehicle gates—21:00 closing from April to September and 23:00 from October to March—if carrying equipment back to the car.
