Église Saint-Gervais, formally Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, is a Roman Catholic parish church on Place Saint-Gervais in Paris’s 4th arrondissement, east of Hôtel de Ville. A church has stood on or near the site since the early medieval period, while construction of the present building began in 1494. The structure combines a flamboyant-Gothic nave and choir with a classical west façade built between 1616 and 1621; its bell tower was completed in 1657. The church was classified in its entirety as a Monument historique in 1862. Its stained glass spans several periods, from late-medieval panels to twentieth- and twenty-first-century works. Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais is also associated with the Couperin family, including the organists Louis and François Couperin. On Good Friday, 29 March 1918, a German shell struck the church during Mass, killing 91 people and injuring around sixty; a memorial chapel commemorates the victims. The church is served by the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. Its postal address is 13 rue des Barres, while the entrance is on Place Saint-Gervais.
