Cathédrale Saint-Étienne
St. Stephen’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, also known as Cathédrale Saint-Étienne or Saint-Stéphane, is the cathedral of Paris’s Greek Orthodox Church and the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of France. It stands at 7 rue Georges Bizet in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, close to the Alma bridge and the Trocadéro–Passy area.
The church was built between 1890 and 1895 through the initiative and funding of the Greek benefactor Demetrius Stefanovich Schilizzi. Architect Émile Vaudremer directed the project. The building was inaugurated on 22 December 1895 and combines a neo-Roman exterior influenced by Lombard architecture with a Byzantine-inspired interior. Its furnishings include an iconostasis and decorative stained glass.
The church became the seat of a Greek Orthodox bishopric in 1953 and the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of France in 1963. It was listed as a historic monument in 1995. The cathedral remains an active religious centre, with services and programmes published by the metropolitan authority. Visitors should consult the operator before planning an interior visit, as a regular seven-day visitor schedule is not recorded here.
