Cancún has two distinct visitor areas: the mainland city and the long Hotel Zone on a narrow barrier island. Beaches, resorts and several attractions line the Hotel Zone, while downtown contains markets, local restaurants and transport connections. Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and Puerto Morelos are separate excursions rather than extensions of a walkable centre. Group each day by corridor to avoid repeated crossings of the lagoon.
