Use Belgrade's free buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz, compare airport routes, and check live service changes before each journey on travel days.

This guide is part of our Belgrade destination coverage. Belgrade

Build the route before choosing the mode

Belgrade's integrated public-transport system is free to use, so the main visitor decision is the route rather than the ticket. The city decision applied from 1 January 2025 makes scheduled passenger transport within the integrated tariff system free for every person using it. The Tourist Organization of Belgrade confirms that the measure covers urban and suburban buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz. A visitor does not need a resident card, a stored-value ticket or a reduced-fare entitlement to use those services under the published rule.

Free travel does not make the network interchangeable. The Secretariat for Public Transport maintains separate timetable groups for buses, trams, trolleybuses, night lines, BG Voz and E lines. Start with the actual origin and destination, then compare the line, stop and walking connection shown for that journey. Central Stari Grad is compact enough that walking between nearby sights may be clearer than waiting for a short ride. A cross-river trip to Novi Beograd or Zemun, a climb away from the centre, or a connection to a railway station is where the network usually becomes more useful.

Use the Secretariat's timetable and current-changes pages together. The live changes list shows roadworks and construction affecting groups of lines, not only isolated stops. It currently includes changes involving airport routes and services affected by work around the Old Sava Bridge. A route number remembered from an older guide can therefore remain real while its path or stop changes. Search the chosen line on the official site on the travel day and read any linked change notice before walking to the platform.

Treat every published departure as scheduled time, not a promise of arrival. Street traffic, construction and temporary diversions can change the useful connection even when the timetable remains visible. For BG Voz, use the date-bounded railway timetable and current operating notices; for road services, check the line timetable and active-change list. Keep enough margin for the walk to the stop and for one missed connection when the journey ends at a train, event or airport departure.

Do not buy a city ticket for a free journey

For ordinary travel inside Belgrade's integrated public-transport system, the first ticket decision is that there is no fare to buy. The city decision in force from 1 January 2025 makes scheduled passenger transport within the integrated tariff system free for every person using it. The official tourism information identifies urban and suburban buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz as covered services. A visitor therefore does not need a resident card, stored value, validation or a concession to use the published network.\n\nThat changes the order of a sensible travel-planning decision. List the journeys first, then identify which ones are scheduled services inside the integrated system. Do not begin with a tourist-card comparison or an old fare table. A city sightseeing or attraction product may still sell admissions, a guided circuit or another service, but its transport component has no separate value when the journey you need is already free. Compare the product for what it includes apart from ordinary network travel.\n\nThe decisive boundary is the service, not the wording used in an advertisement. The public-transport decision applies to scheduled passenger transport in Belgrade's integrated tariff system; it does not automatically include every vehicle described as a Belgrade bus, airport service, shuttle, tour or transfer. Intercity coaches, taxis, private shuttles and sightseeing vehicles have their own operator terms. Check the operator before boarding instead of treating a city name or a familiar route description as proof of inclusion.\n\nKeep the evidence current when an older page gives a different answer. The official fare page is the source for the city rule, and the official tourism page states which modes are covered. If a commercial product claims that it supplies a better transport deal, ask what additional service justifies the price. If the product's current terms do not establish a discount, transfer condition or validity rule, leave that detail unknown rather than importing it from a superseded paid network.

Match the airport line to the final destination

Airport travel is a boundary question within Belgrade's wider network, not a second fare system to memorise. The airport identifies lines 72, 72N and 600 as scheduled public-transport services that are free under the integrated city rule. A1 is separately ticketed, so its presence on an airport page does not extend the free-fare rule to every airport vehicle. Check the operator and service type before boarding.\n\nThe city-network page only needs that distinction. For stop-by-stop route choices, published departure details, late arrivals and taxi procedure, use the dedicated Belgrade airport-transfer guide. That page carries the airport-specific practical detail; this section keeps the decision boundary visible so an airport product is not mistaken for a general city pass. Once the airport leg is settled, plan the rest of the visit from the network, current changes and the final walking connection.

Choose buses, trams or BG Voz by corridor

Use buses and trolleybuses for the broadest street-level reach, but choose them from the current route rather than from a generic city map. The official network has separate bus and trolleybus timetable groups, while the changes page records stop moves and diversions caused by works. This matters in a city where the direct-looking line can be slowed or rerouted by the street it uses. Check both directions: the stop across the road may not be the return stop when a temporary one-way diversion is active.

Trams are useful when their rail corridor matches the day, especially for journeys between central and New Belgrade districts, but track work and bridge projects can change the route for longer than a short event closure. The official route page for tram 9, for example, lists Slavija, Sava Square, Novi Beograd station and Block 45 while also carrying a notice about service changes connected with removal of the Old Sava Bridge. That is a planning example, not a recommendation to rely on line 9 unchanged. Open the notice attached to the selected tram before building a tight connection around it.

BG Voz is a different kind of tool: it can cross the wider city without following street traffic, but it runs to a railway timetable rather than appearing on demand. The current published schedule includes Zemun, Novi Beograd, Beograd Centar, Karađorđev Park and Vukov Spomenik on the main urban corridor, with services extending beyond the central visitor area. Match the named station to the attraction or accommodation and include the access walk. Beograd Centar is a railway station name, not a promise that every central sight is immediately outside its platforms.

The BG Voz timetable is explicitly date-bounded, and the Secretariat publishes separate operating-change notices. In February 2026 it listed temporary cancellations and altered regularity on outer services and told passengers to check current information for reliable planning. Do not turn a printed time into a frequency promise for every station, day or holiday. Read the row for the exact direction and date, then confirm any current notice before setting out.

Night lines are a named part of the official network, not proof that each daytime route runs all night. Search the night-line timetable separately. The airport's 72N page provides a concrete example: it names Republic Square and the airport as endpoints, calls the journey 30–40 minutes and states that it is free. For a late arrival elsewhere, identify the night route and final walk in advance; do not assume that the nearest daytime stop has overnight service.

Avoid obsolete fares and overconfident timetables

The most common planning error is allowing an old paid-network page to decide today's journey. Belgrade's official city rule makes scheduled transport in the integrated tariff system free from 1 January 2025, and the tourism information names the covered modes. Treat old SMS instructions, zone prices, validation steps and fare-evasion advice as historical unless the current official pages confirm that they still apply to the service you are using. A page can remain searchable after its fare model has changed.\n\nThe reverse error is just as practical: calling every vehicle in the city free because the public network is free. The rule has a defined service and tariff boundary. A commercial shuttle, taxi, sightseeing vehicle or intercity coach must be checked against its own operator terms. Do not use the existence of a free city route to infer the price, payment method or validity of another product. When a current operator page does not publish a detail, keep that detail unrecorded.\n\nThe timetable error is to treat a route number as a permanent route shape. The Secretariat publishes current changes because construction, roadworks, events and other traffic conditions can move stops or alter service. A familiar line may still exist while the useful interchange has changed. Open the timetable for the chosen line, then read the linked current-change notice before setting out. For BG Voz, use the date-bounded railway timetable and the current operating notice rather than assuming a rail departure is available at the same pattern every day.\n\nBuild the final check around the whole journey: origin, destination, walking connection, direction and the date of travel. Leave margin when a connection matters, especially for a train, event or another timed commitment. Free travel removes the purchase step; it does not remove the need to verify the right service, the right direction and the current stop.

Common questions

Is public transport in Belgrade free for visitors?

Yes. The city decision makes scheduled passenger transport in Belgrade's integrated tariff system free for every person, and the official tourism site includes urban and suburban buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz.

Do I need a transport card or ticket in Belgrade?

Not for the verified free integrated city and suburban network. Separately operated products can still require payment, so identify the operator before boarding; the A1 airport minibus, for example, requires a cash RSD ticket from the driver.

Which free bus connects Belgrade Airport with the old centre?

Line 72 runs between Nikola Tesla Airport and Zeleni Venac. The airport operator states that it is free and gives an approximate journey time of 30–40 minutes; check the live timetable and current changes for the travel date.

Is there a free night bus to Belgrade Airport?

Yes. The airport operator lists line 72N between Republic Square and Nikola Tesla Airport as free, with an approximate journey time of 30–40 minutes. Verify the current departure rather than assuming a fixed overnight frequency.

Is the A1 airport minibus free?

Do not treat A1 as part of the free claim. Its official page says that a ticket is bought from the driver and that payment is cash only in Serbian dinars. The current page checked does not publish the price.

Are Belgrade public-transport times guaranteed?

No. Timetables are scheduled departures, and airport journey times are explicitly approximate. Check the Secretariat's current changes for the chosen line and allow time for waiting, walking, traffic and diversions.
