About Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius (Belgrade)

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is a Roman Catholic church in Belgrade’s Banovo Brdo neighbourhood, at Požeška 35 in the Čukarica municipality. Its Serbian name is Crkva Svetih Ćirila i Metodija, and the church is dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius. The building was designed for the Lazarist order: construction began in 1929 and the church opened for worship in the same year. It was the fourth Catholic church in Belgrade, according to a local architectural and heritage account. The church is a single-nave, hall-type building with a bell tower, a compact form that distinguishes it from Belgrade’s larger monumental churches. Its history is also connected with the Holocaust in Serbia. Andrej Tumpej, the church’s first parish priest, helped Jews during the Second World War and was later recognised as a Righteous Among the Nations. The parish remains part of Belgrade’s Catholic church network; the city’s official religion listing identifies it at Požeška 35 and gives the telephone number 3056-120.
