Emirgan Park

Emirgan Park is 470,000 square metres of wooded hillside above the European shore of the Bosphorus in Sarıyer, and it has been changing hands for as long as anyone has been writing things down. The Byzantines called the slope Kyparades, the cypress forest. In the mid-sixteenth century it went to Nişancı Feridun Bey. In the seventeenth, Murad IV gave it to the Safavid commander Emir Gûne Han, and Emirgûne wore down over time into Emirgan. The three pavilions are the reason to climb the hill rather than walk a flat park. Isma'il Pasha built all of them between 1871 and 1878. The Yellow Pavilion is a 400-square-metre two-storey hunting lodge designed by the court architect Sarkis Balyan. The Pink Pavilion is a two-storey Ottoman house named for its cranesbill-pink exterior. Ninety minutes covers walking the slope and taking in the three pavilion terraces without stopping for a meal. That is a real walk rather than a stroll: the park climbs, the paths loop, and the distance between the Yellow and White pavilions alone is 150 metres of it. Eating at one of the pavilion cafés is a separate activity and should be planned as one. The two decorative ponds are the most reliable frames in the park because they give a foreground and a reflection in a place that is otherwise all canopy and slope. Shoot them early, before the surface is disturbed. The pavilions are harder than they look. The Pink Pavilion's colour is the point and it collapses to grey in flat light, so it needs sun or it needs skipping.
