Yıldız Park

Yıldız Park is a wooded hillside of 368,751 square metres — roughly thirty-seven hectares — climbing from the Beşiktaş shoreline to the ridge behind it. It is a grove, not a lawn: the ground rises steeply the whole way, and the paths switchback through mature forest rather than crossing open park. Its recorded history starts as the Kazancıoğlu Bahçesi, which passed to Sultan Murad IV and was given by him to his daughter Kaya Sultan. During the Tulip Era it hosted the entertainments of the Çırağan festivities. Yes on foot. The grove is scattered with imperial buildings, and each has a story that is not decorative. The Malta Köşkü, by Sarkis Balyan and named for the Maltese limestone in its walls, is where the trial of Midhat Pasha was held — in a tent pitched behind the pavilion. Ninety minutes is the working figure, and most of it is spent walking uphill. A visit that enters at the bottom gate, climbs to the Malta Köşkü terrace, loops past the ponds and comes back down uses that time comfortably. Cutting it shorter means either skipping the climb — which is the whole point of the place, since the views only start high up — or turning round before the pavilions.
