Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a major Islamic place of worship in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE, it stands as one of the largest mosques in the world. The structure combines contemporary design with traditional Islamic architectural elements, featuring white marble domes and minarets visible across the cityscape. It serves both as an active religious site and a destination for visitors interested in Emirati culture and Islamic heritage. The complex’s four minarets rise above a composition of white marble, reflecting pools and 82 domes whose forms draw on several Islamic architectural traditions.

The mosque interior contains prayer halls capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. The main prayer hall houses what is reported to be among the world's largest hand-knotted carpets, along with elaborate chandelier installations. White marble surfaces extend throughout the complex, with floral designs and calligraphic details incorporated into walls and columns. Reflecting pools surround parts of the structure, creating mirror effects against the building's exterior. The library holds collections related to Islamic civilization, art, and science available for research purposes. The main prayer hall also contains one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets and monumental chandeliers set beneath the central dome.

The mosque's official cultural tours last 45 to 60 minutes. Allow about 90 minutes for a first visit so there is time for security screening, the visitor route, the main prayer hall and the exterior arcades in addition to the tour. The official tours begin on the east side of the mosque, and visitors are asked to arrive around 15 minutes before departure. Photography or a longer walk around the reflective pools can extend the visit beyond two hours. Add time for the visitor entrance, security screening and the underground route before reaching the main courtyard and prayer hall.

Regular visitor hours are 09:00 to 20:30 from Saturday through Thursday. On Friday, the mosque receives visitors from 09:00 to 11:30 and again from 14:30 to 20:30, leaving the congregational-prayer interval closed to sightseeing. The official Sura night tour operates daily from 21:00 to 09:00 and requires its own booking. An early morning or evening visit reduces exposure to the open courtyards during Abu Dhabi's hottest months, while the white marble and pools take on different colours near sunset. Friday sightseeing pauses around congregational prayer, creating a midday closed period before visitor access resumes in the afternoon.

The mosque's current visitor tariff is AED 10 for visitors from outside the United Arab Emirates, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders and AED 8 for visitors entering through a tour operator. An online access pass is required and can be reserved up to one month before the visit. The mosque's official walk-in cultural tours are free and run in English and Arabic, so there is no need to pay an unofficial guide at the entrance. Official delegations use a separately determined tariff. The booking confirmation supplies the arrival details used at the visitor entrance, so keep its code available through security and reception.

The mosque stands between the Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed bridges that connect Abu Dhabi Island with the mainland. Visitor vehicles enter from Al Salam Street through Gate 6 and use the signed southern car parks. The mosque's official guidance lists public bus, taxi and private car as the standard arrival options; it does not operate a city transfer service. Shuttle carts connect the parking areas with the visitor-route starting point, with priority support for senior visitors and people of determination. Wahat Al Karama stands directly opposite and connects by pedestrian bridge and shuttle, making the two memorial sites practical to combine.

All visitors pass through security screening and must follow the mosque's dress code. Clothing for men and women must be long, loose and ankle-length; women must also cover their hair with a headscarf. Shoes are removed before entering the prayer halls. Keep voices low, follow the marked visitor route and avoid photographing worshippers without permission. Wheelchairs are available from security staff, and electric club cars carry senior visitors and people of determination between the parking areas and the tour starting point.

Personal photography with non-professional equipment is allowed only at the mosque's designated photo stops. Commercial and media photography, professional equipment and flying objects require prior authorization from the Centre. The visitor code also prohibits lying down, disruptive poses and any photograph that compromises the privacy of worshippers or other visitors. The reflective pools, white arcades and main courtyard provide the principal marked viewpoints; keep the visitor route clear while composing photographs and put the camera away wherever staff direct.
