About Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage

The Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage is a free museum at 1A Dryden Terrace in Edinburgh, within the McDonald Road fire-station site. It is operated by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Heritage Team. The official museum presents Scottish firefighting from the creation of Edinburgh’s municipal fire service in 1824 through later equipment and working practices. Displays include historic fire engines, uniforms, objects, interactive exhibits and family activities.

The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 and closes on Sunday and Monday. The entrance is approached from Dryden Terrace. The operator also provides a free Bloomberg Connects guide with an 18-stop audio tour and written highlights in more than 50 languages. Guided tours are subject to volunteer availability, so they should not be assumed for every visit. The published telephone number is 0303 001 6299. The museum’s accessibility guide states that the venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users and asks visitors with specific requirements to contact the team before arrival.
