Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens is the London site of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: a working scientific institution and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape rather than a single conservatory or historic house. The operator describes a 320-acre site holding more than 50,000 living plants, with botanical collections linked to its research and conservation work. Its visitor overview presents Kew as a complete garden landscape with science behind the collections, seasonal plant displays and multiple attractions. The name Kew Gardens therefore refers to the overall destination, not only to its best-known glasshouse or one historic building.

Kew Gardens contains outdoor collections, glasshouses, galleries and historic attractions spread across a large landscape. The current operator schedule treats each component separately: the Palm House, Temperate House and other glasshouses have their own closing time; the Treetop Walkway, Children’s Garden and galleries also follow attraction-specific hours. Kew Palace, the Great Pagoda and Queen Charlotte’s Cottage are grouped as Historic Royal Palaces attractions and do not share one uniform timetable. Plan from the general garden map, then check the day’s attraction schedule instead of assuming that every building remains open until the garden gates close.

Kew does not publish one standard duration for seeing the whole site. Its official maps show a broad network of paths and distinct clusters of glasshouses, gardens, galleries and historic buildings, so the useful planning unit is a chosen route rather than a claim that every highlight fits into a fixed number of hours. Start with two or three priorities and use the map to connect them from your arrival gate. The accessibility map also marks approximate walking times from Victoria Gate to selected attractions, helping visitors judge distance without presenting those short walks as a total visit duration. Check individual attraction closing times before placing an indoor stop late in the day.

For 1–30 September 2026, Kew Gardens is scheduled to open daily from 10:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:00. On 13 September, the Gardens open later at 11:00 because of Richmond Runfest. These garden-gate times do not automatically apply to every attraction: the current schedule lists the glasshouses from 10:00 to 17:00 and gives separate closing times for galleries, shops, restaurants and the Treetop Walkway. For later dates, consult the operator’s seasonal table rather than carrying September hours into October or winter. Planned closures should be checked on the visit date as well.

Kew’s peak adult daytime admission for 2 September–31 October 2026 is £25 online or £28 at the gate, before any voluntary donation. The operator says online booking offers the best-value tickets. It also lists an after-16:00 ticket through 30 September and a £10 Tuesday offer from 8 September to 29 December, each with its own conditions. Child, young-person, student, concession and benefit rates use separate eligibility rules. Out-of-hours events such as Christmas at Kew require an additional event ticket, so ordinary daytime admission should not be presented as covering every programme held at the site.

Choose the gate that matches your route. Victoria Gate is the pedestrian entrance closest to Kew Gardens station, which is 500 metres away on the District and Mildmay lines; its westbound platform has no level access. Richmond station has lift and level access, with bus 65 serving Lion or Victoria Gate. Elizabeth Gate is closest to Kew Bridge station and river services, while Brentford Gate serves the limited car park. Kew’s own directions state that the Gardens are outside London’s Congestion Charge zone but inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone. Drivers should therefore check current ULEZ requirements and not treat the two zones as the same charge.

Check Kew’s planned-closures page immediately before visiting because a garden ticket does not guarantee that every building or path is available. The current notice lists Waterlily House closed for renovation until spring 2027, along with closures of the Natural Area Board Walk, Minka House and Ice House. Brentford Gate remains open during renovation, although delays are possible. September also has date-specific closures or early finishes for the Hive, galleries, Orangery and Reading Room. Kew states that there are no lockers or baggage-storage facilities in the Gardens, so large luggage should be arranged elsewhere before arrival.

Commercial photography and filming at Kew require an application to the operator. Kew’s published conditions do not allow shoots in areas closed to the public, on beds or plants, or with live flowers brought into the Gardens. Lighting equipment and drones are prohibited, all equipment must remain off paths, and other visitors must not be obstructed. Staff may inspect the permit, and Kew can withdraw it if the conditions are breached. These are commercial-shoot rules, not a blanket description of every visitor photograph, so do not infer a private equipment policy beyond Kew’s current visitor regulations.
