The American Museum of Natural History stands on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in Theodore Roosevelt Park, directly across Central Park West from Central Park itself. It is not one building but twenty-one interconnected ones, holding forty-five permanent exhibition halls, a planetarium and a research library across more than 2.5 million square feet. The collections run to roughly thirty-two million specimens and cultural objects, of which only a small fraction is ever on display at once, and the museum averages about five million visits a year. The halls are arranged by subject rather than by chronology, and a first visit usually gets pulled toward four or five headline objects. The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, on the first floor, hangs a ninety-four-foot blue whale model over a room of dioramas; on its lower level sits the "Squid and the Whale", a staged fight between a sperm whale and a giant squid. The museum publishes no suggested visit length, so the useful anchor is its own free highlight tour: guides run one every hour at half past, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, and it lasts about seventy-five minutes while covering only the iconic halls. That is the floor, not the plan. Add the walking between forty-five permanent halls spread over four floors and twenty-one connected buildings, add a queue at security, add lunch, and three to four hours is the realistic figure for a first visit that does not feel like a march. Step-free entrances or public approaches, lifts where required, and accessible toilets serve principal visitor areas.

Personal photography with a hand-held camera is allowed throughout, except where a sign says otherwise, and flash attachments are permitted. Selfie sticks are not allowed anywhere in the museum. Tripods and lights are prohibited, which rules out long exposures and means the dim diorama halls have to be handled at high ISO or braced against a rail. No photography or filming at all is permitted inside the theaters, including the Hayden Planetarium Space Theater and the LeFrak Theater. Reproducing or selling any photograph taken here needs the museum's permission. Adult general admission is USD 30; New York residents use the museum’s stated pay-what-you-wish policy with proof.
