Bangkok Airport Transfers: Rail, Bus and Taxi

Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Thailand’s main airport about 31 kilometres east of the city, and Don Mueang (DMK), about 25 kilometres north and 46 kilometres from BKK. At BKK, the Airport Rail Link is on level B1 and connects at Makkasan and Phaya Thai with the MRT and BTS networks. The airport also lists buses, vans, taxis, Grab and AOT Limousine. At DMK, the SRT Red Line serves Don Mueang and Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal or Rangsit. BMTA buses A1–A4, taxis, Grab, limousine and public vans use marked airport stops. The free BKK–DMK shuttle is only for passengers connecting between flights. Board at BKK level 2, gate 3, or DMK Terminal 1, level 1, door 6; show onward-flight proof and a passport or national ID. Neither airport publishes one reliable door-to-door time for every Bangkok hotel. At BKK, the rail journey ends at the Airport Rail Link station; include the level B1 walk, wait, interchanges and the final MRT, BTS or walk. BKK buses serve different areas: S1 to Khao San Road/Sanam Luang, route 554 towards Rangsit, S6 (also numbered 555) to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, and route 558 to Central Rama 2. These are route endpoints, not hotel travel times; traffic and the final connection add time. (Suvarnabhumi Airport transport guide)

The SRT Red Line provides station-to-station travel, not a fixed airport-to-hotel duration. Krung Thep Aphiwat is the city interchange; Rangsit is the opposite direction. A taxi, Grab car or limousine can take you to the stated address, but traffic, toll roads and pickup queues change the drive. For a BKK–DMK change, budget for the full 46-kilometre road journey, terminal movement, check-in and baggage procedures rather than relying on a single journey-time estimate. DMK BMTA airport-bus fares are route-specific: A1 to Mo Chit 2 and A2 to Victory Monument cost 30 baht; A3 to Lumphini Park and A4 to Sanam Luang cost 50 baht. These are single route fares; an onward BTS, MRT, bus or taxi is separate. (Don Mueang BMTA service page)

SRT’s current fare table lists 33 baht between Krung Thep Aphiwat and Don Mueang. Red Line fares vary by station pair, from 12 to 42 baht across the listed adult trips, so select the exact origin and destination before buying. (SRT Red Line fare information; SRT Red Line FAQ)

BKK publishes bus routes and operating windows but no fixed fares for S1, 554, S6 (555) or 558 on its transport page. The Public Transportation Center information counter can confirm the current price. Note that BKK’s S6/555 is a public bus to Krung Thep Aphiwat; DMK separately lists a BMTA van 555 between the two airports. (Suvarnabhumi Airport transport guide)

Regular BKK taxis start at 35 or 40 baht, depending on type, then charge the regulated meter fare plus a 50-baht airport surcharge. Tolls and regulated baggage fees may be additional. Collect a queue ticket before joining; waiting time depends on demand. EV Society and CABBY VIP taxis start at 150 baht; CABBY adds a 100-baht service charge. AOT’s inter-airport shuttle is free for eligible connecting passengers. The separate DMK-listed public van 555 costs 60 baht and runs Monday–Friday in morning and afternoon windows; it is not a weekend backup. (Suvarnabhumi Airport shuttle information; Don Mueang BMTA van 555)

BKK’s Airport Rail Link is published from 05:30 to 24:00. The airport does not give one fixed interval on this page. BTS service is listed from 05:00 to 01:00, but the final train for a particular interchange may leave before the system closes. BKK lists bus windows as follows: route 554, 05:30–22:00; S6 (555), 05:30–24:00; route 558, 04:45–22:30; and S1, 06:00–20:00. It publishes no fixed headway for these routes, so check the airport information counter for the current departure. (Suvarnabhumi Airport transport guide)

At DMK, BMTA A1 runs 05:45–24:00 every 15 minutes; A2 runs 06:00–23:00 every 15 minutes; and A3/A4 run 06:00–23:00 every 30 minutes. Route and stop determine which one fits your destination. (Don Mueang BMTA service page)

SRT publishes Red Line service daily from 05:30 to 24:00, with individual departures by station and direction. A train towards Rangsit does not take you towards Krung Thep Aphiwat; verify the destination on the timetable. (SRT Red Line FAQ; SRT Red Line timetable)

The free BKK–DMK connecting-flight shuttle runs 05:00–24:00 every 30 minutes. It requires proof of onward travel and a passport or national ID; city-only travellers cannot board. After the BKK Airport Rail Link closes at 24:00, AOT lists metered taxis and Grab as 24-hour services; AOT Limousine also operates 24 hours from level 2. Regular taxi queue tickets are at level 1, gates 4–7; Grab pickup is level 1, gate 4. (Suvarnabhumi Airport transport guide)

Sunday uses each operator’s published pattern: BTS has a Saturday/Sunday/holiday interval table and SRT says the Red Line operates daily. Check the date and direction, especially for a final interchange. (BTS service hours and intervals; SRT Red Line FAQ)
