Washington Airport Transfers: DCA, Dulles and BWI

Washington’s three principal passenger airports are Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), Washington Dulles International (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI). DCA and Dulles connect directly to Metro; BWI connects to regional rail via an airport shuttle.

DCA is the easiest arrival for central Washington. Its elevated Metrorail station connects directly with Terminal 2 through enclosed pedestrian bridges. From Terminal 1, take any airport shuttle to Terminal 2 or North/South Parking 1 and 2, then follow the bridge signs. Blue and Yellow Line trains serve the station. Dulles has an on-airport Silver Line station. An indoor pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways links the Main Terminal and Metro, so the airport-to-train transfer does not require a terminal bus. Washington Flyer taxis leave from the lower terminal level; Uber, Lyft and other authorised ground-transport options use marked airport areas. BWI is in Maryland rather than Washington, but it has a useful rail connection. Board the free Amtrak/MARC shuttle at the lower level, travel to BWI Rail Station, then take a southbound MARC Penn Line or Amtrak train to Washington Union Station. DCA and Dulles connect directly to Metro, but neither airport has one door-to-door time for every Washington address. BWI publishes approximately 30 minutes from the airport to Washington Union Station using the Amtrak/MARC connection and approximately 35 minutes for the MARC-specific option. Those figures describe the airport-to-Union-Station leg: they exclude the free shuttle wait, boarding, the station walk and your final Metro or street journey. A direct BWI taxi or rideshare is published at approximately 45 minutes to Washington. MTA Commuter Bus 201 is published at approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to Shady Grove Metro station, before the onward Metro trip. WMATA Metrorail uses distance- and time-based fares. Its current full-fare range is $2.25–$6.75 for weekday trips between 5:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., $2.25–$2.50 on weekday evenings after 9:30 p.m. and $2.25–$2.50 at weekends. For a single Metro ride, tap the same contactless credit or debit card, mobile wallet or SmarTrip card at entry and exit. Using SmarTrip or contactless payment also gives the published Metro Rail–Metro Bus transfer discount within two hours. DCA taxis are metered, accept cash or credit card and must use the airport taxi meter. The airport links to approximate rates but tells passengers to consult the taxi operator for the fare to the airport; it does not publish one fixed price for every Washington address. Uber and Lyft display their current fare in the app after you enter the destination and select the airport pickup zone. Washington Flyer taxis at Dulles accept cash and major credit cards and use metered service. Nearby tolls can affect the road journey, and the airport publishes no single fixed fare for every Washington destination. BWI gives route information for taxis and rideshare rather than a universal city price; check the meter or app before departure. MARC fares depend on the origin and destination selected on the current fare chart. Buy through CharmPass, a ticket machine or another listed sales channel when available. A ticket bought aboard the train carries a $5 surcharge if a machine or open ticket office was available at departure. Amtrak sets its own date-specific fares and availability. BWI’s free Amtrak/MARC rail shuttle runs about every 10–15 minutes, slowing to about every 25 minutes from 1:00–5:00 a.m. BWI lists the Amtrak shuttle from 6:23 a.m. to 12:52 a.m. weekdays and 6:23 a.m. to 1:52 a.m. weekends; MARC has a separate, shorter schedule. Metro is not a 24-hour airport connection. Current system hours are Monday–Thursday 5:00 a.m.–midnight, Friday 5:00 a.m.–2:00 a.m., Saturday 6:00 a.m.–2:00 a.m. and Sunday 6:00 a.m.–midnight. For a late Dulles arrival, Washington Flyer taxis operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no reservation needed when leaving the airport.
