Walking speed, weather, and stops to study the military remains all affect the pace. A short visit still provides woodland and elevation, while a longer route turns the area into a half-day hike.

Cooler, drier months from October through March are generally more comfortable for hill walking. Summer brings heat and humidity, while rain can make steep paths and exposed surfaces slippery. Typhoon conditions can affect access and visibility. Earlier starts help reduce heat and leave more daylight for linked routes. Clearer weather also improves harbour views, although the wooded sections remain worthwhile when haze limits the panorama. Choose a route that matches the day’s weather and your walking experience.

Steep slopes, steps, and uneven surfaces demand concentration, especially after rain. Wear shoes with secure grip and carry water because trail supplies are not part of the hill experience. Humidity, sun, and biting insects can make a short route feel harder than its urban setting suggests. Take care around old military structures and do not climb unstable remains. If you continue toward Victoria Peak, Pok Fu Lam, or Kennedy Town, remember that the descent can place sustained strain on knees and legs.
