Peak Tram

The Peak Tram is a double reversible funicular railway that hauls two tramcars up the north face of Hong Kong Island between Garden Road in Central and Victoria Gap, the saddle in the hills where the Peak Tower stands. It is not a sightseeing add-on invented for tourists: it opened on 30 May 1888 as the first cable funicular in Asia, built to carry residents up to the hill districts when the alternative was a sedan chair, and it still runs on its original alignment. The operator publishes the numbers plainly. The track is 1,278 metres long.

There are three things to see here and they are stacked on top of one another. The first is the ride. The 2022 tramcars are painted a bespoke "Peak Tram Green" chosen as a nod to the third and fourth generation cars of 1948 to 1989, and they carry wider doors, step-free access for wheelchair users and larger panoramic windows than the cars before them. The floor is a waveform, shaped deliberately so that standing passengers on a 25-degree grade have somewhere level to put their feet. The second is a genuine optical effect rather than a marketing line.

The ride is short and the visit is not. The operator states that a tramcar takes approximately six minutes to complete a one-way trip, so a return journey is roughly a quarter of an hour of actual travelling. This guide records 90 minutes for the Peak Tram as a whole, and that figure is an editorial estimate covering the queue at the Central Terminus, the climb, twenty minutes or so at the top and the descent. The uncertain part is the queue, and it is worth being honest about it: the operator publishes no expected queueing time anywhere on its site.

Daily 07:30–23:00, including public holidays. No regular weekly closure. Service is scheduled to close for maintenance on 8 September 2026; the Peak Tower and Sky Terrace 428 remain open that day. The tram runs 7:30am to 11pm every day of the week including public holidays, and the last tram departs at 11pm, so the choice is which part of a very long day to use rather than which day to come. The operator's own crowding advice is to arrive before 3pm during non-peak hours and to buy tickets in advance, with crowd control implemented on public holidays and in festive seasons.

Adult Peak Tram tickets cost HK$82 single or HK$116 return on all days. Sky Terrace 428 requires a separate ticket or combo ticket. Prices on the operator's own webstore on 26 August 2026, in Hong Kong dollars. A tram-only single ride is HK$82 for an adult aged 12 to 64 and HK$52 for a child aged 3 to 11 or a senior aged 65 and over. A tram-only return is HK$116 adult, HK$75 child and senior. The Peak Tram Special Combo, which pairs a return ride with admission to Sky Terrace 428, is HK$146 adult and HK$95 child and senior; Sky Terrace 428 bought on its own is HK$80 and HK$50.

The Central Terminus is at 33 Garden Road. From MTR Central Station, use Exit J2 and follow the signed pedestrian route for approximately 10–15 minutes. The Peak Tram Central Terminus is on Garden Road, within walking distance of MTR Central Station: leave by Exit J2 and follow the pedestrian route, which the operator puts at roughly 10 to 15 minutes and which passes several well-known Central landmarks on the way. That walk is the normal approach and no other transport is needed to reach the bottom station. For the return leg, or for a day when the tram queue is impossible, the same hill is served by road.

Wheelchair users require assistance from station staff. Platform facilities include ramps, special access gates and call bells. The Transport Department describes the service as accessible to most disabled passengers but not independently accessible to wheelchair users. The queue is the thing that ruins visits, and buying online does not shorten it. The operator is explicit that timed tickets manage the flow of visitors but confer no priority boarding, that the wait depends on the day's numbers, and that seating and standing space are first come, first served. If a tram fills, the honest move is to wait for the next one rather than stand at the back on a 25-degree climb.

Two hard restrictions come first, both from the operator: tripods and lighting are not allowed on the tram, in the Peak Tower or on Sky Terrace 428 for safety reasons, and flying a drone on Peak Tram or Peak Tower property is prohibited without the management company's permission. Handheld is the whole game here. On the way up, the side to be on is the right. The operator's own account of the University of Hong Kong study describes the high rises on the right of the tram appearing to fall towards the Peak, and that is the side the towers are on; the 2022 cars have larger panoramic windows than their predecessors, which helps.
