About Tai Fu Tai Mansion

Tai Fu Tai Mansion stands in Wing Ping Tsuen, San Tin, Yuen Long, in Hong Kong’s New Territories. The residence was built in 1865, during the Tongzhi reign of the Qing dynasty, for Man Chung-luen, a 21st-generation ancestor of the Man clan. Its name refers to the honorific title “tai fu”, meaning senior official, bestowed on him. The mansion is a fine example of a traditional southern Chinese residence associated with the scholar-gentry class. Its main building follows a two-hall, three-bay layout, with side chambers arranged around a courtyard. An east wing contains a parlour and internal courtyard; the west side has a kitchen, side chamber and lavatory. Decorative details include plaster mouldings, wall paintings, wood carvings, ceramic figures and painted glass panes showing Western influence. The Antiquities and Monuments Office supervised a full restoration completed in 1988. Declared a monument in 1987, Tai Fu Tai offers a focused look at San Tin’s Man-clan history and nineteenth-century Chinese domestic architecture.
