About Eve

Ève is a public sculpture at the Parc de la Butte-du-Chapeau-Rouge in Paris’s 19th arrondissement. The work has stood since 1939 at the top of the park’s water fountain, where it forms a visual landmark above the entrance landscape. Raymond Couvènges created the sculpture, which belongs to the Art Deco movement through its pronounced geometric shapes and curved lines. Its silhouette also recalls the sculptural language of Aristide Maillol, who was active during the same period. The figure originated as a model for a group made for the 1937 Exposition Internationale, displayed on the curved Delessert gate at the Trocadéro. Architect Léon Azéma later selected Couvènges’s work for reproduction in stone when the park was laid out. Sources use several names for the statue, including Ève, Accueil de Paris, and Femme au bain.
