Alfred de Musset
The Grave of Alfred de Musset is in Division 4 of Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris’s 20th arrondissement. Alfred de Musset was a French poet and writer, born in Paris in 1810 and buried in the cemetery after his death in 1857. His monument stands on the first row of the cemetery’s main avenue. The memorial includes a white-marble bust signed by sculptor Jean-Auguste Barré and dated 1858. A lyre, laurel branches, and a palm decorate the pedestal. Musset’s grave is also associated with a willow planted in accordance with his wishes; the tree has died and been replaced several times. The monument is a specific literary memorial within the much larger Père-Lachaise grounds, so visitors should use the cemetery’s official maps or the monument’s Division 4 location to navigate. Père-Lachaise is a functioning cemetery, and the City of Paris asks visitors to remain discreet during funerals and periods of remembrance.
