Square du Vert Galant is a municipal garden at the western tip of Île de la Cité in Paris’s 1st arrondissement. The triangular riverside space forms the island’s prow and is reached from Place du Pont-Neuf. Its position beside the Seine creates broad views toward the Louvre, Pont des Arts, Hôtel de la Monnaie, Institut de France, Académie française, and the École des Beaux-Arts. The garden became a municipal green space in 1884 after the western end of the island was reshaped during construction of the Pont-Neuf. Its name refers to Henri IV, whose equestrian statue stands on the bridge above the square; “Vert Galant” was the king’s nickname. Trees recorded by the City of Paris include lime trees, a walnut, a ginkgo, a hornbeam, and a weeping willow at the point. The square is suited to a short riverside walk, landscape views, and photographs in central Paris. The City notes that the garden closes during strong winds or severe weather.
