Kilmainham Gaol

Kilmainham Gaol is a decommissioned county prison on the western edge of Dublin 8, kept as a museum by the Office of Public Works and reached only on a guided tour. Building work started in 1786 on Gallows Hill, the ground chosen because its height promised better drainage and fresher air than the older prison it replaced, and the new gaol opened in 1796. The last prisoners left in 1924 and the building was abandoned, the formal Closing Order following in 1929. Daily: Courthouse Visitor Centre 09:30–17:15; Museum 10:30–17:15. On 23 December, the Visitor Centre closes at 16:15 and the Museum at 16:45.

A visit has two halves that are sold as one ticket. The guided hour walks the prison itself: the eighteenth-century wing with its narrow cells, the doorway carved with five writhing figures that are variously called dragons, demons or a hydra and are said to stand for murder, rape, theft, treason and piracy, and the Victorian East Wing that replaced the original east range. The tour ends outdoors in the Stonebreakers' Yard. Open year-round except 24–27 December inclusive. Entry to the Gaol is by pre-booked guided tour only. Allow ninety minutes. That is the figure the Office of Public Works publishes and it is honest rather than cautious: the guided tour of the building runs one hour to a fixed timetable, and the museum needs the other thirty to forty-five minutes if the three floors are to be more than a corridor walked at speed. The clock does not start at the tour time. There is one useful exception. Adult admission is €8 and includes the guided tour and museum access. Online pre-booking is essential.

The gaol opens every day of the year except 24 to 27 December inclusive, so the question is not which day but which slot. The Courthouse Visitor Centre opens at 09:30 and the site closes at 17:15; the museum galleries themselves open an hour later, at 10:30. The gaol stands on Inchicore Road in Kilmainham, Dublin 8, about 3.5 kilometres west of the city centre, and no car is needed to reach it. The Luas red line runs closest: Suir Road is the nearest stop, a walk of roughly fifteen minutes. The museum is on Inchicore Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, about 3.5 km from Dublin city centre. Dublin Bus route 60 serves it from Wellington Quay or Heuston Station; routes G1 and G2 serve it from Spencer Dock or Wellington Quay. The nearest Luas stop is Suir Road on the Red Line. There is no visitor car park at the Gaol; parking is available at the Irish Museum of Modern Art/Royal Hospital Kilmainham via East Gate on Military Road, followed by a five-minute walk through West Avenue and Richmond Gate. Richmond Gate opens at 11:00 on Sundays. Arrive 15 minutes before the booked tour, or 30–40 minutes early for either of the final two tours if you want museum time beforehand.

The tour is not recommended for children under six, and that is a judgement about content and duration together: an hour of standing, listening and walking on uneven stone, in rooms where the subject is imprisonment and execution. The Office of Public Works publishes no rule on personal photography at Kilmainham Gaol on either its own site or the Heritage Ireland page; the only photography page it offers covers filming and commercial shoots, which are handled as venue hire. Ask the guide at the start of the tour rather than assuming, and take the cue from the group. What can be said with confidence is where the pictures are. Expose for the balustrades and let the skylight go. Tickets are released 28 days ahead at midnight Irish time. Additional same-day or cancellation tickets are released online between 09:15 and 09:30.
