Istanbul Naval Museum

Two things here are genuinely singular and neither is what a visitor expects. The first is the historic galley, the kadirga, dated to the span between the reigns of Murad III and Mehmed IV, which is the only surviving original galley anywhere in the world and carries what is described as the oldest continuously maintained wooden hull. The second is the fleet of imperial and ceremonial caiques displayed across the upper floors, long slender state barges that were the sultan's transport on the Bosphorus and are shown at full length rather than in fragments. Ninety minutes is the working figure, and unlike most museums of this size the time is unevenly distributed. The caique galleries on the upper floors take longer than their object count suggests because the hulls are long, they are best read from several angles, and walking the length of one and back is itself several minutes. The caiques are the photograph, and the difficulty is that they are long, thin and in a room that will not let you stand far enough back. Do not try to fit a whole hull into one frame from the side. Shoot from one end down the length of the boat instead, so the hull recedes and the gilded carving at the stern anchors the foreground; that composition works with a normal lens and gives a sense of scale a broadside view flattens away.
