Galata Mevlevihanesi

The Galata Mevlevihanesi is the oldest Mevlevi dervish lodge in Istanbul, established in 1491 during the reign of Bayezid II on land that had belonged to İskender Pasha, a prominent governor of the period. For more than four centuries it housed the community of whirling dervishes who followed the teaching of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, and its sheikhs included the poet Şeyh Galib, one of the last great figures of Ottoman divan verse. The centrepiece is the semahane, the ceremonial hall, laid out on an octagonal plan and carrying eighteenth-century baroque detailing from the rebuilding that followed the fire of 1766; further repairs came under Selim III, Mahmud II and Abdülmecid.
