About Kadıköy Haldun Taner Stage

Haldun Taner Stage is a theatre venue on Kadıköy’s waterfront in Istanbul. The building was constructed between 1925 and 1927 by Italian architect Umberto Ferrari as Istanbul’s first modern market hall. It later served as Kadıköy’s wholesale market before being repurposed for cultural use.

The building was restored for conversion into a cultural centre in 1984 and allocated to Istanbul University in 1986 for use by its State Conservatory. Since 1989, part of the ground floor has operated as Haldun Taner Stage under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theatres. The stage is named after Haldun Taner, the Turkish playwright, short-story writer and essayist.

The venue stands at İskele Meydanı, beside Kadıköy’s ferry terminal. Its location places the theatre within the district’s main transport interchange and close to the market, central square and waterfront promenade. City Theatres presents Turkish-language productions here, with the programme and performance dates varying by season. Visitors should check the operator’s current programme and ticket information before travelling.
