Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is a two-level attraction built into The Dubai Mall and run by Emaar Entertainment, the mall's own leisure arm. The core of it is a single ten-million-litre tank on the mall's ground floor, holding more than 140 species and, by the operator's count, over 300 sharks and rays. The operator describes it as the world's largest suspended aquarium, meaning the tank hangs within the mall's own structure rather than sitting in a purpose-built shell of its own. Monday–Thursday 11:00–21:00; Friday–Sunday 10:00–21:00. Last entry daily at 20:15.

The tunnel is the shortest part and the one most people came for. Forty-eight metres of acrylic, eleven metres down, with rays passing overhead and sand tiger sharks working the middle water. There is no branching route; a visitor walks in one end and out the other, and the only decision is how long to stand still. The Underwater Zoo on Level 2 is the longer half and is divided into three named zones. Open 365 days a year, with no regular closure day stated by the operator.

The operator publishes its own estimate and it is unusually specific. The Aquarium Tunnel takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes. The Underwater Zoo on Level 2 takes about 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The glass-bottom boat ride, if taken, adds 15 to 20 minutes on top. Stopping for a feeding presentation extends all of it. That is the figure recorded here. Two operational rules shape the pacing. The base Silver ticket costs AED 199 and includes the Aquarium Tunnel, Underwater Zoo and Penguin Cove, plus an AED 20 shop voucher.

The attraction is open 365 days a year, so there is no closed day to plan around. Hours differ across the week rather than across the seasons: Monday to Thursday it opens at 11:00, Friday to Sunday at 10:00, and every day it closes at 21:00 with last entry at 20:15. Three tiers are sold, all priced per person and all listed by the operator without an adult and child split. The attraction is inside The Dubai Mall in Downtown Dubai, and the operator publishes its address two different ways on two different pages. From Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, use the climate-controlled Metro Link Bridge, which enters Level 2 near Fashion Catwalk. RTA bus routes 27, 28, 29 and F13 serve the mall and use the tourist drop-off area by the Zabeel Parking main entrance. Inside the mall, the Aquarium Tunnel is on the Ground Level and the Underwater Zoo is on Level 2.

The single rule that catches people out is re-entry. The operator is explicit: re-entry is not permitted and a ticket is valid for one entry only. In a building full of restaurants, that turns a lunch break into the end of the visit. Eat first, or finish first. Guided tours are not available to walk-up visitors. Two smaller things. Some optional encounters are not step-free, including the ray and shark-trainer experiences, which require stairs, and the bird and reptile encounters, which exclude wheelchairs and strollers.

Personal photography and video are permitted throughout, and the operator says so plainly. What is restricted is flash: it is prohibited in certain areas for the animals' sake, and those areas are signed along the route. The operator also sells a professional photography service that works the visit, so expect to be offered a posed shot at least once. The conditions are difficult in the way every large aquarium is difficult. Bracing against the tunnel wall helps more than any setting.
