Arbour Square Gardens is the central public garden of Arbour Square, a late Georgian square in Stepney, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Tower Hamlets lists the space as under one hectare and identifies it among the borough’s parks and open spaces. The council’s history records that Arbour Square was built in the 1820s and opened to the public by the London County Council in 1904. The square belongs to the tradition of London garden squares protected by the London Squares Preservation Act 1931. It stands just off Commercial Road, about one mile east of the City of London. The garden’s setting combines a formal green space with surviving early nineteenth-century terraces. Historic England lists the west-side terrace at 1–13 Arbour Square as Grade II for its architectural and historic interest. Arbour Square Gardens is therefore best understood as a small historic urban garden and a surviving piece of Stepney’s Georgian townscape, rather than a large destination park.
