About Conway Hall Ethical Society

Conway Hall is the London home of the Conway Hall Ethical Society, an organisation whose history began in 1787 and whose present humanist identity developed during the nineteenth century. The society moved from South Place to Red Lion Square and opened its present building in 1929. Designed by Frederick Herbert Mansford, Conway Hall is a Grade II-listed building recognised for its elegant classical entrance, stone urns and largely intact interior. Historic England also identifies the building’s connection with the long-standing South Place Ethical Society as part of its historic interest. The hall continues to host talks, debates, performances, concerts and community events. Its Humanist Library and Archives hold a major UK research collection on humanism and ethics. The venue is also associated with the South Place Sunday Concerts, a chamber-music series that began in 1887. Conway Hall stands at 25 Red Lion Square in London’s Holborn district.
