Honolulu Airport Transfers: Skyline, Bus and Taxi

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is Honolulu’s main airport and the arrival point for international, mainland and most inter-island flights. HNL is 10 miles from Waikīkī. The airport lists taxi, shuttle, ride-app, bus and rail connections; it does not list a separate Honolulu passenger airport with a more useful scheduled transfer. Skyline’s Lelepaua Airport Station stands between the International Parking Garage and Terminal 2 Parking Garage. Use it for Pearl Harbor, Pearlridge, Waipahu and West Oʻahu. To reach Waikīkī, transfer to the W Line at Āhua Lagoon Drive Station, or take the W Line directly from the airport bus stop on Ala Onaona Street. The W Line is the simplest public-transport choice for Waikīkī. It runs eastbound from HNL through Downtown Honolulu, Kakaʻako and Ala Moana Shopping Center to Waikīkī. Roberts Hawaii Express Shuttle offers shared, private XL and private luxury black-car transfers to hotels, homes and offices around Oʻahu. Collect your bags, follow the yellow Roberts signs and find a yellow-shirted agent at the listed baggage-claim pickup points. Honolulu’s published W Line figures between HNL and Waikīkī are 45 minutes on weekdays, 41 minutes on Saturdays and 39 minutes on Sundays. These are route running times, not hotel-to-hotel promises. HNL and Honolulu’s transport pages do not publish a fixed Skyline-to-Waikīkī duration. The complete journey includes the terminal-to-station walk or shuttle, the rail journey, the transfer at Āhua and the W Line. Check the live itinerary for your exact address instead of treating Skyline as a direct Waikīkī train. Roberts Hawaii publishes booking and pickup arrangements rather than one universal HNL-to-hotel duration. A shared vehicle can make several hotel stops; a private vehicle goes to the booked address. The adult cash fare on TheBus is $3.25 each time you board. Pay exact change; drivers carry no change and cash fares do not include transfers. An adult HOLO Card costs $2 for an initial or replacement card. The current products are $3 for a two-hour pass, $7.50 for a 24-hour pass or daily cap, $20 for a three-day pass and $45 for a seven-day pass. Skyline requires a HOLO Card. HNL says adult cards are available from the ticket vending machine at Lelepaua Airport Station. A paid HOLO tap allows free transfers between Skyline and TheBus for up to two hours; cash does not provide transfers. Buy or load the card before entering Skyline. Roberts Hawaii lists its shared fare per person: $29 for an arrival transfer to Waikīkī and $26 for a departure transfer to HNL. Up to two standard bags and one carry-on per person are included. Kahala and Ko Olina/Kapolei are $43 per person on arrival; those shared bookings require two passengers, or a solo passenger is charged for two. Private XL and black-car prices are per vehicle. Skyline runs on weekdays and weekends from 4:00 a.m. until the start of the last full trip at 10:00 p.m. Trains arrive every 10 minutes from 4:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., then every 15 minutes through 10:30 p.m. Additional trips run after 10:00 p.m., but they do not cover the entire line. The W Line runs every 10 minutes during weekday peak periods, every 15 minutes off peak and every 30 minutes after 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holiday service is every 15 minutes, changing to every 30 minutes after 7:00 p.m. Check the date-specific departure in TheBus’s planner before leaving baggage claim. The W Line’s published span is 4:15 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. the following day on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Route 42 has a different role: HNL lists it only after 10:30 p.m., with westbound airport-to-ʻEwa Beach service and one daily eastbound airport-to-Waikīkī trip. Roberts Hawaii departs HNL daily and offers shared or private bookings, but it publishes no repeating interval such as every 15 or 30 minutes. Book against the flight and follow the confirmation. Sunday daytime travel has a clear public-transport pattern: Skyline runs daily, while the W Line runs every 15 minutes before its evening reduction to 30 minutes after 7:00 p.m. Choose the direct W Line for Waikīkī, or combine Skyline with the W Line when the rail route fits your destination better. After 10:30 p.m., HNL lists Route 42, but eastbound airport-to-Waikīkī service is limited to one trip daily. The airport does not publish a universal late-night bus frequency for every destination. Skyline’s last full-route trip starts at 10:00 p.m.; later trips do not serve the whole line. For a late Sunday arrival outside the public timetable, reserve Roberts Hawaii and follow its confirmation or use the official taxi rank, subject to availability.
