About Eastern Hill Fire Station

Eastern Hill Fire Station is an active Fire Rescue Victoria station and a registered heritage precinct in East Melbourne. FRV records that its Eastern Hill headquarters opened in 1893 and remains functional. The Melbourne Planning Scheme identifies the precinct at Gisborne Street, Albert Street and Victoria Street as Victorian Heritage Register place H1042. Historical fire-service material is preserved within the complex, but the emergency station, heritage buildings and museum function should not be treated as one unrestricted visitor attraction.

FRV currently offers a specific public fire-station display at Eastern Hill on Fridays at 10:30. The one-hour session is free, but booking through TryBooking is essential because numbers are limited. FRV’s notice updated 3 September 2026 says the September and October sessions are booked out, with limited availability in November. Displays may not take place on public holidays. Use 456 Albert Street, East Melbourne, and enter via Gisborne Street for a confirmed display booking. Questions about the session go to the Central District Office on +61 3 9665 4501. The display allows participants to meet firefighters, see a fire truck and learn how specialised rescue equipment is used. It is not a weekly museum opening time and does not authorise walk-in access to operational areas. Attend only at the booked time and follow FRV staff directions.
