Jiaye Library is a historic private library in Nanxun Ancient Town, Huzhou, Zhejiang, China. Built in 1924 for bibliophile Liu Chenggan, it was created to house his extensive collection of Chinese books and classical texts. The library became one of the largest private book collections in southeast China, reportedly holding hundreds of thousands of volumes at its height. Its name comes from the imperial inscription “Qin Ruo Jia Ye,” associated with the final Qing emperor, Puyi. The building is arranged around a courtyard and includes a two-storey library structure, halls and covered corridors. A surrounding garden with pavilions, trees and water reflects the Jiangnan private-garden tradition. Today, Jiaye Library is part of Nanxun’s preserved historic landscape and is administered as one of Zhejiang Library’s library buildings. It offers visitors an opportunity to see a rare combination of book-collection history, traditional architecture and garden design within the wider canal town.
