Nanjing Museum, known locally as 南京博物院, is a provincial public museum on East Zhongshan Road in Nanjing’s Xuanwu District. Its institutional history reaches back to 1933, when Cai Yuanpei and others proposed the National Central Museum. The present museum developed from that project and occupies the southern foot of Zijin Mountain, near Zhongshan Gate. The complex follows a “one museum, six halls” structure: the History Hall, Special Exhibition Hall, Digital Hall, Art Hall, Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall, and Republic of China Hall. Its collections span archaeology, history, art, and material culture, with holdings dating from the Paleolithic period through the modern era. The historic main hall was designed by Xu Jingzhi and revised by Liang Sicheng, drawing on architectural principles associated with the Yingzao Fashi and Tang-Song decorative traditions. The museum is a substantial stop for visitors studying Nanjing’s regional history and China’s archaeological and artistic heritage.
