Suzhou Silk Museum is a specialist museum devoted to the history and technology of silk in China. Founded in 1991, it stands at 2001 Renmin Road in Suzhou’s Gusu District, near Beisi Pagoda. The museum’s displays follow the silk process from mulberry cultivation and silkworm breeding to weaving, dyeing and finished garments. Its exhibition areas include ancient and modern silk galleries, a children’s science-education section, a mulberry garden, a silk-weaving machinery exhibition and the Qian Xiaoping Silk Culture and Art Gallery. Visitors can see silk cultural relics, traditional loom demonstrations and examples of modern silk technology. The museum is also associated with the conservation and reproduction of silk textiles, and serves as a research and protection base for Songjin, or lampas, and Zhangduan, or patterned velvet, both recognised as intangible cultural heritage techniques. The venue is administered through Suzhou’s municipal culture and tourism authorities and is presented as China’s first museum specialising in silk.
