About Saint-Augustin
Saint-Augustin is a Roman Catholic church in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, standing on Place Saint-Augustin in the perspective of Boulevard Malesherbes. Victor Baltard designed the building, which was constructed between 1860 and 1871 and inaugurated in 1868. Its defining architectural feature is a metal framework clad in stone, an unusual combination for a nineteenth-century church. The dome rises about 50 metres above the church, while the façade includes a large cast-iron rose window sculpted by François Jouffroy. The interior and exterior decoration bring together painting, sculpture and stained glass by artists including William Bouguereau, Hippolyte Flandrin, Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and Claudius Lavergne. The church was fully classified as a historic monument in 1993. It remains a place of Catholic worship; the Diocese of Paris states that entry to the church is free and directs visitors to the parish website for current opening hours. The parish lists Place Saint-Augustin as the church address, with a postal address on Avenue César-Caire, and identifies Saint-Augustin and Blessed Charles de Foucauld in its religious decoration.
