Square Claude-Charpentier is a public square in Montmartre, in Paris’s 18th arrondissement. It was formerly called Square du Mont-Cenis. The garden is reached at 14–18 rue du Mont-Cenis and is served by line 12 at Lamarck–Caulaincourt station. Its defining feature is the Château d’eau de la rue du Mont-Cenis, also known as the Montmartre water tower, which the square surrounds. The site is a compact urban green space on the Montmartre hill, making it a practical short stop during a walk through the neighborhood rather than a large destination in its own right.
The square commemorates Claude Charpentier (1909–1995), a French architect and urban planner known for work on the protection and rehabilitation of historic areas. His Montmartre work included a postwar plan for the hill, intended to protect green spaces, preserve views and guide development. Charpentier also restored the Bateau-Lavoir after its 1970 fire and became the first curator of the Musée de Montmartre. The square’s setting links a small neighborhood garden with Montmartre’s architectural and heritage story. Allow a brief visit to see the water tower, pause among the planted paths and continue toward the nearby streets and sights of the hill.
