Zürich Zoo

Zoo Zurich is a 27-hectare zoological and conservation institution on the Zurichberg above the city. It opened in 1929 as a place where visitors could see many exotic animals at close range; the zoo now describes its purpose as conservation, species protection and public education. The shift matters when planning a visit: this is a large collection of habitats with interpretation and conservation projects, not a compact animal house that can be covered in a quick walk.

The zoo organises much of its visitor experience around ecosystems and continental regions. Its official introduction describes an evolution from the earlier display-led model to a conservation centre, including work linked to habitats in Thailand, Indonesia and Madagascar. Zoo Zurich also participates in international breeding programmes and maintains breeding records for Galapagos giant tortoises. The result is a day out that combines animal viewing with a clear conservation agenda.

Zoo Zurich lists more than 380 animal species in nature-like habitats. The Masoala Rainforest, Lewa Savanna and Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park are the major named areas to put on a first visit; the zoo also divides the grounds into continental regions, so the route is more coherent if visitors choose a few habitats rather than trying to inspect every enclosure at the same pace.

Masoala is a substantial part of the visit rather than an optional side room. Its public paths are paved and wheelchair accessible, while the adventure paths require a guide for safety, animal rest and protection of the flora. The zoo app and map show animal locations, presentations, feedings, restaurants, playgrounds and toilets. Check the current-notes page on the day, because Zoo Zurich says that construction work and special events can temporarily restrict individual areas.

Allow four hours for Zoo Zurich. This is an editorial planning estimate, because the operator does not publish a recommended visit duration. Four hours gives a first-time visitor time for the main outdoor habitats, the Masoala Rainforest, a meal or pause, and normal walking between areas without treating each exhibit as a stop-and-go checklist.

Shorter visits work best when they are deliberately narrowed. Two hours can cover one or two priorities, such as Masoala plus the elephant park, but it leaves little margin for presentations, rest breaks or a detour when an animal is out of view. A longer visit is sensible for families using playgrounds or anyone following the app's animal and feeding information. Keep the closing time in view: the whole zoo closes earlier in winter, while Masoala opens an hour after the main gate in both published seasonal schedules.

Zoo Zurich is open every day of the year. From March through October, the zoo is open 09:00 to 18:00 and the Masoala Rainforest 10:00 to 18:00. From November through February, the zoo is open 09:00 to 17:00 and Masoala 10:00 to 17:00. On December 24, the operator publishes a 16:00 closing time for the entire zoo.

Arriving near the 09:00 opening is the most useful planning choice for a full visit, because it creates the widest available time window before the seasonal closing time. Do not plan the route around an assumed fixed animal schedule: the zoo directs visitors to its app and map for current presentations and feedings. Construction and short-term event restrictions can also affect individual areas, so check the zoo's current-notes page immediately before travelling.

A standard adult ticket for visitors aged 18 and over costs CHF 32. Zoo Zurich lists CHF 27 for ages 13 to 17, CHF 18 for ages 6 to 12, and free entry for children under six; all listed prices include the voluntary nature-conservation franc. The published family day pass for two adults with their own children aged 6 to 17 costs CHF 85.

Online individual tickets are valid only for the selected date, so choose the date carefully before buying. The zoo also advertises a sunset ticket from 90 minutes before closing, discounted by 40 percent from undiscounted single-ticket prices. Students aged 18 to 29 and people aged 64 or over receive a 10 percent weekday discount at the box office when they show the required ID; the operator excludes weekends and public holidays. Group rates begin at ten people.

Use public transport for Zoo Zurich. From Bahnhofplatz outside Zurich main station, the operator directs visitors to take tram 6 to its final stop, Zoo. From Bellevue near Stadelhofen station, take tram 8 to Kirche Fluntern and change to tram 6; from Stettbach station, bus 751 goes to Zoo/Forrenweid. These routes avoid relying on the limited parking supply around the zoo.

Driving is possible but should be a fallback. Nearby metered spaces belong to the City of Zurich, are limited in number, and visitors are redirected to external parking when they are full. The zoo notes a regular shuttle bus between the Eisbahn Dolder car park and the main entrance. Cyclists and walkers can use the city route planner, and an e-bike PubliBike station is beside the zoo from spring 2026. Blue Zone rules around the zoo also apply on Sundays and public holidays from 8 April 2026.

Read Zoo Zurich's visitor rules before arrival, particularly when visiting with children or animals. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and visitors must keep their admission ticket until the end of the visit. Dogs and other pets are not admitted; certified assistance dogs are allowed except in the walk-in Australia outdoor facilities. Staff instructions apply throughout the zoo.

Feeding animals is prohibited unless the zoo has specifically arranged the activity: the operator names the Lori aviary and supervised giraffe and porcupine feeds in the Lewa Savanna as exceptions. Do not cross barriers, reach into enclosures, knock on glass, make loud noise or use audio equipment. The zoo also prohibits bicycles, kick scooters, skateboards and similar riding devices inside. Own food is not permitted in Masoala Rainforest, and smoking is prohibited in buildings, animal houses, entrances, restaurants and walk-in animal enclosures.

Photography and filming at Zoo Zurich are permitted for personal use. Commercial recording requires a permit, so journalists, brands, organised shoots and anyone intending to use images commercially should arrange permission before arrival rather than assuming that a standard admission ticket covers the work.

Flash is prohibited in some animal houses. The operator does not publish a single building-by-building flash list on the visitor-rules page, so treat on-site signage and staff instructions as decisive. Keep a respectful distance from enclosure boundaries, do not use sound or other devices to attract animals, and avoid turning a photograph into an interruption for animals or other visitors. The Masoala Rainforest is included in general admission, but its guided adventure paths are not freely accessible for photography or any other purpose.
