MAHANAKHON SKYWALK (king power)

The Mahanakhon SkyWalk is Thailand's highest observation deck, at the top of the pixelated tower in Bang Rak whose bitten-away spiral of glass boxes made it the most recognisable building added to Bangkok's skyline in a generation. Time Out lists it as the country's tallest deck with a glass floor; Rough Guides makes the same case for the view. The view is the argument for coming. Daily 10:00–00:00; last access 23:00. The route the operator publishes runs upward in stages. Entry is on the first floor, through a corridor and lift lobby, from which a high-speed lift climbs to the 74th floor. That level is the indoor observatory: glazed on all sides, air-conditioned, with a bar and seating, and it is where a visitor can actually stand still and look. From there a glass elevator continues to the 78th floor rooftop, which is open to the air at 314 metres. No weekly closure day is listed. Outdoor attractions, including the Glass Tray, may close because of weather conditions.

Allow an hour. The operator publishes no suggested duration for the SkyWalk, so sixty minutes is judgement across the published route — the first-floor entry corridor, the indoor deck on 74, the glass elevator, and the rooftop and glass tray on 78 — and it deliberately excludes the queue for the glass floor, which is the one unpredictable element and can add substantially at a busy hour. An hour is comfortable at opening, when the deck is quiet.

The deck is open every day from 10:00 to midnight, with last access at 23:00, and no closed day is published. The best hour is 10:00, at opening — judgement rather than published visitor data, but it is the quietest hour and it also falls in the cheaper price band, which is a rare alignment. The recorded admission is 1,000 THB per person, taken from the operator's own price table for the ticket type named "Mahanakhon SkyWalk" and described there as the indoor and outdoor observatory decks on the 74th and 78th floors. No Thai-national versus foreigner distinction is published: one price for everyone. Two limits on that table matter. Adult Mahanakhon SkyWalk admission is THB 1,000 for entry from 10:00 to 15:30 and THB 1,200 from 15:30 to 19:00. The ticket covers the indoor and outdoor observatories on floors 74 and 78. BTS Chong Nonsi, exit 3, is the approach the operator names as the most convenient, and it is a short covered walk from the station to the tower base in Bang Rak. Take the BTS Silom Line to Chong Nonsi Station and use Exit 3. BRT passengers can arrive via Sathorn Station. Bus routes 15, 16, 34, 77, 162 and 187 serve the area. Limited parking is available at Mahanakhon CUBE, with the first 30 minutes free for outlet visitors. The visitor route uses a multimedia lift to floor 74 and a glass elevator connection through floor 75 to the rooftop level.

The weather is the real risk and no refund policy compensates for judgement: at 314 metres, low cloud or monsoon haze removes the entire product, and a ticket bought in advance for a specific slot cannot see through it. The 78th-floor rooftop is the reason to bring a camera, because it is open air — no glass, no reflections, no compromise — and that is what separates it from most observation decks. Shoot the horizon from the terrace, and use the tower's own bitten-away form in the frame where the edge allows it. Timing is the whole craft here. Bring something to brace on, because the rail is the only tripod available and tripods are commonly restricted on decks like this.
