Anadoluhisarı is a siege engine in stone, built sixty years before the siege it was meant for. Bayezid I raised it between 1393 and 1394 as a watch fort to blockade what was still Byzantine Constantinople, and its original name was Güzelce Hisar, the Beauteous Fortress. The great frame from up here is not the fortress but what it was built to watch. From the tower top the strait narrows to 660 metres and Rumelihisarı sits square on the far bank — put the two fortresses in one frame with the water between them and you have photographed the blockade itself, which no picture of a single wall can do.
