About Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Polonezköy

Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa is a Roman Catholic church in Polonezköy, Beykoz, on Istanbul’s Asian side. The present building was constructed in 1914 after an earlier wooden church was destroyed by an earthquake. The Latin Catholic Church in Istanbul describes the earlier building as dating from 1869 and identifies the current church as one of Polonezköy’s important symbols. The church stands in a garden near the village entrance and remains connected with the Polish character of Polonezköy.

The church’s history reaches back further: a small Holy Anna chapel was built in 1845–1846 by Bosnian Franciscan monks. The current church has a simple design attributed to N. Siliwinski. During the First World War, Turkish soldiers used the building as a headquarters; it was restored in 1918. Wikidata records the building as preserved and identifies it as both a church building and a Catholic church building.
