Gülhane Park

Gülhane Park is 9.7 hectares of shaded slope below Topkapı Palace, and for most of its life it was not a park at all but the palace's outer garden — ground the public did not enter. A section of it was opened to the city in 1912. The name attaches to something older and heavier than a flowerbed: in 1839 the Edict of Gülhane, the decree that opened the Ottoman reform century, was proclaimed at the Gülhane building on this ground. What a visitor meets today is a working municipal park with imperial bones. Yes. Three things inside the park are worth walking to. The Column of the Goths rises 18.5 metres of Proconnesian marble under a Corinthian capital, and its base carries the line FORTVNAE REDVCI OB DEVICTOS GOTHOS — to Fortuna, who returns by reason of victory over the Goths. Scholars place it in the third or fourth century and argue between Claudius II Gothicus and Constantine the Great. It is the oldest Roman monument still standing in the city, older than the refoundation of Constantinople itself. 22:30 under regular hours. An hour. That is enough to enter at the Alay Köşkü gate, walk the length of the main avenue under the planes, detour to the Column of the Goths, carry on to the terrace at the top of the slope where the Golden Horn opens out, and come back down at a pace that lets you look at things. The picture most people come for is the tulip beds in April, and it is best made low and early, before the beds are ringed by other cameras. Down at bed height with the palace wall behind, the flowers separate from the crowd instead of competing with it. The stronger picture is the Column of the Goths. It is tall, thin and hemmed by trees, so it fights a wide lens; step back down the path and shoot it long, letting the canopy frame the shaft. General park admission is free.
