About Kadıköy French Catholic Church

Kadıköy French Catholic Church is the common English name for Notre-Dame de L’Assomption, a Latin Catholic church in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district. The church was commissioned after an 1858 decision to establish a Catholic church on Istanbul’s Asian side; its foundation stone was laid in 1859, and construction was substantially completed in 1863. Other historical references date the completed building to 1865. Giovanni Battista Barberini is identified as its architect. The neoclassical church has a domed cruciform plan and a west façade marked by two bell towers. The church belongs to the Latin Catholic community and holds worship in French and Turkish. In 1895, the parish church and its annexes were entrusted to the Assumptionist Fathers. The present-day church schedule lists weekday, Saturday and Sunday services, including bilingual Turkish/French Masses. Visitors should treat the published schedule as a worship timetable rather than a museum-opening schedule.
