Rexx Cinema was a landmark movie theater in Caferağa, Kadıköy, on Istanbul’s Asian side. The building stood at the meeting point of Sakızgülü Sokak and Kadife Sokak, close to Bahariye Avenue. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality records the current structure as a 1961 work by architect Maruf Önal, whose design uses a modernist, brutalist vocabulary with concrete beams, glass surfaces, and a distinctive spiral staircase in the foyer. The site has a longer performance history: the Apollon Theatre was built there in 1873, later becoming Hale Cinema in the 1930s before the present cinema was constructed. The venue was known as Reks when it opened and adopted the Rexx spelling in the 1990s. It hosted mainstream screenings as well as festival and alternative-film programmes, including Istanbul Film Festival events. Rexx Cinema closed in 2020 and entered a long period of disuse. Demolition began in 2025 after decisions concerning the site, so this record represents a historic cinema landmark rather than an operating venue.
